Department of Medicine, Huddinge
The Department of Medicine in Huddinge is organized into seven units and houses a total of 70 independent research groups and three research centers. The department has the ambition to be at the forefront of medical research and education.

Description of research group and project
At the Center for Infectious Medicine (CIM), the research aims to study the human immune system. The vision is to be a world leading translational research center within immunology.

The overall research interest of the Björkström lab (http://ki.se/en/medh/niklasbjorkstromgroup) is human innate lymphocytes, with a particular focus on tissue-resident Natural Killer (NK) cells, in the human liver and uterus. Currently, the group consists of four PhD-students, four postdoctoral researchers, one research nurse, one lab manager and one research coordinator. The research team conducts basic immunological and translational studies, where the role for NK cells is investigated in normal liver and uterus, as well as in different disorders of these organs.

The majority of the work is performed in close collaboration with clinical scientists at the Karolinska University Hospital, and key to the success for many projects is access to unique patient material. The focus of the current position is basic studies of intrahepatic lymphocytes.

Duties
The successful candidate will study basic aspects of human tissue-resident (TR) NK cells in health and during liver pathology, using a combination of molecular-, cell-biological, and immunological techniques.

TR NK cells will be investigated in healthy and diseased human liver regarding phenotypic, functional and transcriptional properties, and in comparison to circulating NK cells and TR NK cells in various other human tissues.

For this postdoctoral project, a strong emphasis will be work with primary human clinical material, including liver tissue. The postdoctoral fellow will be required to execute a variety of techniques, including sample preparation from various human tissues for advanced multicolor flow cytometry, cell sorting and RNA sequencing. The fellow will also perform a variety of cell culture and in vitro functional assays, and extensively analyze high-dimensional data.

Clear and concise communication and written skills in English are mandatory, and the successful candidate will be in weekly contact with clinical collaborators at the Karolinska University Hospital. The postdoctoral fellow is expected to plan, execute, and analyze experiments in an independent manner and contribute scientifically to CIM and the Björkström group.

Entry requirements
A person is eligible for a position as Postdoctoral Researcher if he or she has obtained a PhD no more than seven years before the last date of employment as postdoc. The term can be extended under special circumstances.

Applicants should have a strong background in human tissue immunology or human cancer research. Previous experience in the NK cell field would be a plus. Applicants with competence in advanced multicolour flow cytometry and cell sorting, and the analysis of respective data sets will receive priority. Work involving next generation sequencing is strongly considered as an additional qualification.

Application process
An employment application must contain the following documents in English or Swedish:

  1. A complete curriculum vitae, including date of the thesis defence, title of the thesis, previous academic positions, academic title, current position, academic distinctions, and committee work
  2. A complete list of publications
