Karolinska Institutet,

At the Department of Physiology and Pharmacology we teach and conduct internationally acclaimed, high-quality research in Physiology, Pharmacology, Anesthesiology and Intensive care. We have around 400 employees, 30 research groups, and 90 doctoral students. Our research fields include cellular signaling, cardiovascular and respiratory systems, neuropsychopharmacology, neuroinflammation, pharmacogenetics, regenerative medicine, Renal System, anesthesiology and intensive care, muscle physiology and pain. Our collaboration with the clinics at Karolinska University Hospital provides unique opportunities for translational research within our subjects. Researcher in Biology and Muscle Pathophysiology (Scholarship)
A Postdoctoral position is available in the research group of Associate Professor Stefano Gastaldello at the Department of Physiology and Pharmacology, Karolinska Institutet.

Our major contribution towards the muscle physiology field is to identify new skeletal muscle proteins targeted by SUMO in normal muscle activity and in muscle disorders. The identification of numerous key regulatory proteins, which functions are controlled by SUMO modification and undergo to a global/massive changes in SUMOylation status, may predict the state of the disease and provide useful information for muscle disorders diagnosis, progression and prognosis.

We aim also to characterize the underlying mechanisms of the up/down-stream signals that regulate expression and activity of SUMO enzymes since they will provide new useful information on SUMO muscle physiology and suggest novel approaches to manipulate SUMOylation in order to fighting muscle diseases.

Duties
The candidate

  • will conduct research within the skeletal muscle field with a focus on SUMO protein posttranslational modification.
  • will be responsible for the development, organization and contribute to scientific discussions and presenting outcomes to colleagues and the PI.
  • will supervise students.
  • will generate and keep update all the experiment results using electronic lab book (KI-ELN).
  • will possibly work with animal models.
  • will be able to prepare draft of scientific publications and small proposal grants.

Entry requirements
Scholarships for postdoctoral qualification can be established for foreign researchers who place their qualifications in Sweden. The purpose of scholarships for postdoctoral qualification is to promote internationalization and contribute to research qualification after a doctorate or equivalent.
A scholarship for carrying out postdoctoral research can be granted for a maximum of two years within a four year period following the receipt of a doctoral degree or equivalent.
To be eligible for a postdoctoral scholarship, the person must have obtained a doctorate or a foreign degree deemed to be equivalent to a doctorate.

The head of the department determines whether their previous training and scholarly qualifications correspond to a Swedish doctorate or higher.

Other requirements

The candidate must have hands-on experience with:

  • Molecular and cellular biology techniques (eukaryotic-prokaryotic cell culture; primary cell culture; transformation, transfection, protein expression, SDS PAGE and Western blot; RNA extraction, cDNA preparation, qPCRs).
  • Protein expression and purification (using affinity and traditional chromatographic techniques), protein modification using enzymatic and chemical commercial Kits.
  • Immunofluorescence techniques of fixed cells and tissues. Experience with confocal microscope.

Desired skills

  • Experience to perform CRISPR/Cas9 and siRNA experiments is preferred.
  • Experience in qPCRs: primers design and use different analysis probes (SyberGreen, TaqMan) is preferred.

We seek exceptional, dedicated, self-motivated and hardworking individuals with a positive attitude and with substantial experience in muscular field research. The candidate should have a strong background in molecular and cellular biology, and have a strong track record (as shown by first-author publications in international peer-reviewed journals).

Strong verbal and written communication skills in English are required.

Type of scholarship
The amount is tax free and it is set for twelve months at a time, paid out on a six months basis. In exceptional cases, shorter periods may be acceptable.

Application process
An application must contain the following documents in English or Swedish:

  • A complete curriculum vitae, including date of the thesis defence, title of the thesis, previous academic positions, academic title, current position, academic distinctions, and committee work
  • A complete list of publications
  • A summary of current work (no more than one page)

The application is to be submitted on the Varbi recruitment system.
