The Department of Medicine, Solna, is one of the largest departments at Karolinska Institutet. The department consists of several divisions that are separated into different research groups. The core activities of the department are research, doctoral education and undergraduate education for medical and biomedical students. The research has three main profiles: allergy, cardiovascular medicine and inflammatory diseases.
A doctoral student is admitted to third-cycle/doctoral education. A doctoral education consists of supervised research, combined with courses and other educational activities. An individual study plan is established for each doctoral student. For a doctoral degree, the equivalent of four years of full-time doctoral education is required.
Research group
The doctoral student will be a member of the Chronic Inflammatory Disease Epidemiology group at the Clinical Epidemiology Division. The group is approximately 25 people (doctoral students, postdocs, senior researchers, biostatisticians) conducting epidemiological research using Swedish registers and clinical data. The student will work with Assistant Professor Elizabeth Arkema and her international team studying the causes and consequences of sarcoidosis.
The doctoral student project and the duties of the doctoral student
Applicants are invited to apply for a PhD research training position to work on the design and analysis of epidemiological studies using Swedish cohort and register-based data. The applicant will use epidemiological and biostatical methods to investigate the relationship between lifestyle factors, inflammation and risk of sarcoidosis. The project will apply advanced statistical methods to biomarker, genetics and questionnaire data using a causal inference framework. The ideal candidate will have a strong interest in epidemiology and biostatistics and be motivated to learn new things. During the PhD, the student will conduct data management, analysis, and prepare manuscripts and presentations to communicate results. The project requires active collaboration between clinicians, biostatisticians, immunologists and epidemiologists.
