Karolinska Institutet, Department of NVS

The Department of Neurobiology, Care Sciences and Society (NVS) conducts world leading research in aging, dementia, epidemiology and care sciences. This research extends from basic molecular and cell levels to clinical research and societal studies. NVS educates almost a third of KI students at basic and advanced levels. The Department has approximately 540 employees and a revenue 2023 of 530 million SEK. It comprises seven divisions, located at Campus Flemingsberg and Campus Solna.

Division
The Division of Clinical Geriatrics conducts research on cognitive impairment, dementia, and other aging related disorders. The research is multi-faceted and is in close collaboration with leading institutions and clinics worldwide. The research is clinically oriented with an emphasis on diagnosis, prevention and treatment. Some focus areas include lifestyle factors, prevention and treatment studies, imaging methods, and registry studies.
The postdoctoral studies will take place in the research group of Associate Professor Eric Westman, which is localized in the Neo building at KI Campus Flemingsberg with planned start in October 2019. The focus of the research group has long been on different imaging modalities such as magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) and positron emission tomography (PET) and its applications in neurodegenerative disorders. The postdoc will work in many different projects related to healthy ageing and dementia, always with as strong focus on neuroimaging and cognition.

Duties
A major task for the applicant will be to contribute to the ongoing research activities at the division of Clinical geriatrics, conceptually as well as methodologically. In particular, the person is expected to take an active role in our imaging work, applying advanced automated imaging methods with cognitive data. Further, there are possibilities to initiate individual research projects, based on the person´s interests. The successful candidate should show a high level of responsibility and independency, be able to work in a team and be willing to supervise students.

Entry requirements
Scholarships for postdoctoral qualification can be established for foreign researchers who place their qualifications in Sweden. The purpose of scholarships for postdoctoral qualification is to promote internationalization and contribute to research qualification after a doctorate or equivalent. To be eligible for a postdoctoral scholarship, the person must have obtained a doctorate or a foreign degree deemed to be equivalent to a doctorate before the start of the postdoctoral studies.
We seek for a person with experience in the field of neuroimaging in healthy aging and/or Alzheimer’s disease research. The candidate should be able to conduct advanced image data processing/analysis (Freesurfer, SPM and FSL) and have statistical knowledge. Experience with both healthy elderly and Alzheimer’s disease patients are highly valued. Social and collaborative skills are very important since the applicant will be working with other members of the research team and collaborators. Clinical or neuropsychological experience with patients with cognitive impairment (neurodegenerative disorders) is highly appreciated.
The head of the department determines whether their previous training and scholarly qualifications correspond to a Swedish doctorate or higher.

Type of scholarship
A scholarship for carrying out postdoctoral research can be granted for a maximum of two years within a four year period following the receipt of a doctoral degree or equivalent. The amount is tax free and it is set for twelve months at a time, paid out on a six months basis. In exceptional cases, shorter periods may be acceptable.

Application process
An employment application must contain the following documents in English or Swedish:

  • A complete curriculum vitae, including date of the thesis defence, title of the thesis, previous academic positions, academic title, current position, academic distinctions, and committee work
  • A complete list of publications
  • A summary of current work (no more than one page)

The application is to be submitted on the Varbi recruitment system.
