Karolinska Institutet, Department of Medical Biochemistry and Biophysics, division of Genome Biology

Division
The department of Medical Biochemistry and Biophysics (MBB) currently has twelve research divisions, whose research focuses on basic science and mechanisms that cause disease. Within MBB, the division of Genome Biology explores various aspects of DNA metabolism and genome stability and at present integrates the activities of two internationally renowned laboratories: the Cancer Therapy group led by Oscar Fernández-Capetillo and Genome Integrity group led by Jiri Bartek.

Research environment
The position of Research Assistant is placed at the Science for Life Laboratory (SciLifeLab) in the group of Jiri Bartek. SciLifeLab is an institution for the advancement of molecular biosciences in Sweden and hosts a highly collaborative research community with studies conducted in the entire area of life sciences. A combination of four world-leading universities and cutting-edge technology platforms creates a dynamic and attractive environment for innovation.

Research project
To battle diseases such as cancer we need to understand the processes that drive cell division. But how do human cells multiply? Before a cell divides it has to duplicate its genome and switch between different biochemical states known as cell cycle phases. The projects aims to provide a genetic framework that defines how human cells start DNA replication and at the same time explore the mechanism of action of clinically relevant DNA replication inhibitors. The project includes various state-of-the-art molecular technologies and was recently awarded a StratCan Blue Sky Grant for Innovative Cancer Research & Technology.

Duties
We are currently looking for a Research Assistant that will play a key part within our research team focused on genome stability and DNA replication biology.

The responsibilities of the Research Assistant will be varied and include:

  • Performing diverse molecular biology techniques including PCR, cloning and western blotting
  • Culturing and drug treatments of various human cell lines
  • Genetically modifying human cells by CRIPR technology
  • Assisting with genome-wide CRISPR screens for drug discovery
  • Assisting with live-cell microscopy and FACS sorting studies

Employment period
The position as Research assistant is for one year, with the possibility of extension for an additional year.

Qualifications

We welcome applications from candidates with academic qualifications at least corresponding to BSc in Biomedical Laboratory Science, Biomedicine, Molecular Biology, or other related fields. The successful candidate is a responsible, service-minded person with good communication and organizational skills who enjoys working with people and take pride in delivering work of good quality.
The work requires:
- Previous experience of molecular biology techniques and laboratory work, including cell culturing techniques.
- Good organizational skills and attention to detail
- Proficiency in English, excellent communication skills and a service focus.
The applicant must be able to integrate well into the international and multidisciplinary environment. Personal suitability is therefore of great importance.

Application process
The application is to be submitted in Varbi recruitment system.

At Karolinska Institutet a 6-month trial period is required for all permanent appointments.
