The Institute of Environmental Medicine (IMM) is a department at Karolinska Institutet and an interdisciplinary research institution within the broad field of environmental medicine. IMM conducts cutting edge research within the areas of environmental and occupational medicine, toxicology, physiology, epidemiology, and biostatistics with the aim to clarify how environmental and lifestyle factors affect our health and which role genes have. IMM also serves as a scientific advisor to public authorities within the area of environmental medicine and IMM scientists participate in national and international expert groups.

Area of responsibilities/description of the work

The scientific focus for the current position is to charcaterize cellular and molecular mechanisms behind alterations in host defense among patients with chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD).

A specific responsibility is to manage, run and further develop the characterization strategies for flow cytometry analyses of airway and blood samples from human study populations. The Senior lab manager is also specifically responsible for ascertaining safe biobanking of these samples.

The successful applicant will work mainly in the new laboratories located at Bioclinicum, Karolinska University Hospital Solna. The position includes management of our laboratory logistics in collaboration with scientific coworkers in the research unit. The collection of human samples requires close collaboration with pulmonologists, allergologists and nurses at Karolinska University Hospital Solna.

Qualifications

The candidate must have a scientific background relevant to the study of immunology in human airways and blood. A proven technical and practical understanding of flow cytometry techniques for characterizing immune cells and their cytokine signaling is essential. Documented experience from additional techniques in molecular and cell biology constitute a merit as well.

Required personal characteristics include good organizational skills, curiosity and engagement. Social competence, the ability to work in a team and good communication skills in Swedish and English are important. Documented experience from project coordination is a must. Interest in supervision of master and PhD students is a plus. To qualify, the applicant must hold a doctor’s (Ph.D.) or corresponding degree in cell biology, immunology, medicine, molecular biology or other relevant field of biological research.

Form and time of employment

The position is full-time and temporary for 12 months, with a possible extension. The position will last while the ordinary employee is on parental leave. The employment will start in spring 2019.
