The Department of Neurobiology, Care Sciences and Society (NVS) conducts world leading research in aging, dementia, epidemiology and care sciences. This research extends from basic molecular and cell levels to clinical research and societal studies. NVS educates almost a third of KI students at basic and advanced levels. The Department has approximately 540 employees and a revenue 2023 of 530 million SEK. It comprises seven divisions, located at Campus Flemingsberg and Campus Solna.
The Division of Neurogeriatrics and the research focus
The research at the division of Neurogeriatrics is focused on neurodegenerative diseases, in particular Alzheimer’s disease and aims to translate findings from basic research into clinical practice. An assistant professor to be hired will be working in a research group that has focus on protein aggregation and finding ways to regulate it, with the aim to develop biologic drugs against neurodegeneration. The research group is located in NEO at campus Flemingsberg.
Duties
The position focuses on research in the field of protein aggregation and it can be affected by external factors, in particular molecular chaperones, for future medical applications. The focus will be on protein chaperones, protein-protein interactions and mechanisms for protein assembly using primarily biochemical methods. The duties include setting up and analysis of fluorescence and circular dichroism spectroscopy and electron microscopy and other biochemical experiments.
The applicant is expected to develop an independent research line with a strong profile, writing scientific articles in leading journals, and present research results at scientific conferences and for the public. Furthermore, the person must apply for his / her own research grants and ensure financing for future research, as well as supervising employees in the research group. Also teaching at different levels and courses are included in the service. This employment as Assistant Professor is time limited for 4 years with the right to apply for promotion to Senior Lecturer.
Eligibility requirements
The applicant must have a PhD in the subjects of biochemistry, molecular biology, biotechnology or similar and have a broad knowledge and research experience about proteins, protein structure and aggregation/assembly. Experience in studying amyloid forming proteins and spider silk proteins, as well as practical knowledge of protein structure analyses are meritorious. Preference should be given to those who were awarded a PhD or attained equivalent research competence no more than five years prior to the expiry of the application period for the position of assistant professor. Those who have been awarded a PhD or attained equivalent research competence earlier may however be considered if special grounds exist. Special grounds refer to illness or parental leave.
We are looking for a person who has demonstrated scientific productivity in the form of relevant publications, invitations to presentations at conferences, and has received research grant as main applicant in external competition. It is a merit to have documented theoretical knowledge and competence to perform biochemical and biophysical methods for characterization protein structure, as well as experience of protein production with recombinant methods and protein purification. The applicant should have practical experience of experimental methods used for studies of protein structure. Experience in biochemical production and management of amyloid and/or silk forming proteins/peptides and protein chaperones, as well as characterization of these proteins by spectroscopic methods and microscopy are meritorious.
The research is interdisciplinary and therefore demands for cooperation ability and interest to network. Good ability to communicate in English is a prerequisite. Experience of teaching in the research area and supervision of students is an advantage
Bases of assessment
Scientific expertise will be most important when assessing applicants.
Application process
An application must contain the following documents in Swedish/ English: curriculum vitae, qualifications and description of planned research, presented in accordance with Karolinska Institutet’s qualifications portfolio (http://ki.se/qualificationsportfolio).
The application is to be submitted through the Varbi recruitment system
See the instructions regarding the Appointment Procedure for Teachers at Karolinska Institutet chapter 3.3
An Assistant Professor can apply for promotion to Senior Lecturer. An application is submitted to the Recruitment Committee. In order to be promoted to Senior Lecturer after an assessment by the Recruitment Committee, the applicant must meet the criteria below. The Assistant Professor can choose between two different promotion tracks; promotion to Senior Lecturer with focus on Research or promotion to Senior Lecturer with focus on Education and research.
Promotion of Assistant Professor to Senior Lecturer with focus on Research
Assessment criteria
Promotion of Assistant Professor to Senior Lecturer with focus on Education and research
Assessment criteria
If the applicant is deemed to fulfil all of the above criteria, they will be assessed by two experts in their field and must meet the eligibility requirements that apply to appointments as a Senior Lecturer at Karolinska Institutet.
