Karolinska Institutet,

At the Department of Physiology and Pharmacology we teach and conduct internationally acclaimed, high-quality research in Physiology, Pharmacology, Anesthesiology and Intensive care. We have around 400 employees, 30 research groups, and 90 doctoral students. Our research fields include cellular signaling, cardiovascular and respiratory systems, neuropsychopharmacology, neuroinflammation, pharmacogenetics, regenerative medicine, Renal System, anesthesiology and intensive care, muscle physiology and pain. Our collaboration with the clinics at Karolinska University Hospital provides unique opportunities for translational research within our subjects. We are recruiting a doctoral (PhD) student. For more information regarding doctoral education at Karolinska Institutet (KI), see:

Research group
The Laboratory of Translational Auditory Neuroscience performs research on different aspects of hearing disorders and tinnitus – from molecule to patient. Our research group investigates the cellular mechanisms underlying hearing loss and tinnitus using a battery of physiological and molecular techniques. The group works in an inspiring and interactive research environment at the Biomedicum (Campus Solna) and has on-going collaborative projects with national and international colleagues.

The doctoral education project and the duties of the student
This research proposal has been designed for a PhD student to develop skills and knowledge in the auditory system, integrating peripheral and central components in a multidisciplinary approach to the point he/she will acquire a unique expertise in an emerging field: tinnitus. Thanks to a great network of scientists, the student will embrace translational aspects of his study and work in close hands with clinics and pharmaceuticals. The student will evaluate the robustness of several technologies for the objective measure of tinnitus. This project embraces multiple approaches including audiology (e.g. auditory brainstem responses), psychology (questionnaires), neuroimaging (magnetoencephalography, electroencephalography, and magnetic resonance imaging), and bioinformatics. All of these methods are well-established in the laboratory or accessible at the core facilities from the Karolinska Institute. The student will acquire experience in each of these techniques. The applicant is expected to actively perform research and to analyze and present results to large audiences.

The project will also benefit from ties with a large consortium, the European School of Interdisciplinary Tinnitus (ESIT). The network of PhD students, clinicians, industry, and pharma offers an educational environment for a PhD student in an emerging field.
