Full time, two years fixed term contract.
Genome Engineering Karolinska (GEK). GEK is a new Karolinska Core Facility, which will become fully operational in January 2019. Using CRISPR/Cas9, GEK will create cell lines with user-defined genetic modifications (gene knock-outs, gene knock-ins, point mutations, deletions, etc.) for research groups at KI. GEK will be located at the Department of Medical Biochemistry and Biophysics in Biomedicum at Solna campus. GEK will work closely with HTGE, an established National SciLifeLab facility with long-standing experience with CRISPR/Cas technology. HTGE performs pooled genetic screening using CRISPR/Cas, while GEK will create defined genetic modifications in cell lines. As a unit, HTGE/GEK will form a unique competence center for CRISPR/Cas technology at Karolinska Institutet and the wider Stockholm/Uppsala area. HTGE/GEK is now looking to recruit a motivated staff scientist who will be responsible for both the strategy design and the experimental execution of GEK customer projects.
Job description. The successful applicant will, in close contact with facility customers, design and execute genome engineering strategies in cells. Daily duties will consist of strategy design, establishment and optimization of delivery methods, mammalian cell culture, molecular biology such as cloning and genotyping, and occasionally lentiviral work. An involvement in HTGE/GEK’s own research and development is possible and desirable, such as adapting new technologies and incorporating them into the GEK workflow. Responsibilities will also include general lab management, which is not anticipated to take more than 10% of the full time.
Required skills. Applicants should hold a PhD degree in the life sciences or have attained equivalent qualifications through work experience. You are an expert in culturing mammalian cells, and you have experience in molecular biology techniques such as DNA isolation, PCR, genotyping, cloning, etc. You have, or are willing to acquire, the basic skills in bioinformatics that are required for strategy design. You are organized, meticulous, self-motivated, and you manage your time efficiently. You are comfortable running a significant number of projects in parallel, you enjoy interaction and communication with customers and you are fluent in English.
Advantageous skills. Expertise in FACS analyses, previous experience with CRISPR/Cas9 or other methods of precision genome engineering, as well as experience with primary and/or stem cell cultures are merits. Swedish language skills are an advantage, but are not required.
Application. Your application must include the following documents in English:
Two letters of reference sent directly to bernhard.schmierer@ki.se by the referees should be provided if possible at the time of the initial application (else these will be requested separately for shortlisted candidates).

Application process
The application is to be submitted on the MyNetwork recruitment system.
At Karolinska Institutet a 6-month trial period is required for all permanent appointments.
