Karolinska Institutet, Institutionen för Medicinsk biokemi och biofysik, Division of Molecular Metabolism

Division
The Division of Molecular Metabolism (https://ki.se/en/mbb/research-division-of-molecular-metabolism) at the Department for Medical Biochemistry and Biophysics (https://ki.se/en/mbb/startpage) is located at the newly built and modern Biomedicum research laboratory (https://ki.se/en/staff/biomedicum)  at Solna campus of Karolinska Institutet. The research we perform aims at understanding the regulation of mitochondrial function and the role of mitochondrial dysfunction in disease and ageing. The current research encompasses biochemical and genetic studies of patients with inherited diseases as well as basic scientific approaches to understand the regulation of mtDNA expression, mitochondrial biogenesis and mitochondrial metabolism. Both patient material (tissues and cells), genetically modified fruit flies (Drosophila melanogaster) and mice (Mus musculus) are used in these studies. The overall aim of the Division of Molecular Metabolism is to combine these different areas of research to get insights into disease pathophysiology and to develop novel treatments. The Division of Molecular Metabolism offers an outstanding research environment and a close interaction between basic science and clinical science and diagnostics at the Centre for Inherited Metabolic Diseases (CMMS) at Karolinska University Hospital, Stockholm, Sweden. The newly founded Max Planck Institute for Biology of Ageing - Karolinska Institutet Laboratory (MPI-KI laboratory) is also integrated into our laboratory. Excellent access to the most advanced resources in molecular and cell biology is available at the department and at the national core facilities at the Science for Life laboratory (https:// www.scilifelab.se).

We are currently looking for a Computational Biologist to join the research group of Nils-Göran Larsson.

Duties
One important aspect of our research is to use different types of omics data (RNAseq, proteomics and metabolomics) generated from our experimental model organisms to better understand regulation of mitochondrial function and pathophysiological events in mitochondrial disease. To strengthen our research we are looking for a dedicated computational biologist that will be integrated into our team. The tasks will be to analyse, extend and deepen analyses of omics data. We also expect the recruited person to be involved in experimental design, in particular for high-throughput sequencing experiments; Data QC, data management and archival storage; Analysis of large datasets, including development of new methods and tools for advanced analysis (such as integration of multiple omics datasets), support the ongoing research in the group, shape, develop and maintain the computing resources of the group.

Skills and personal qualities
We are looking for a highly motivated person interested in the area of research of the mitochondrial metabolism. We welcome applications from candidates with at least two/three years of programming and research experience or an equivalent of PhD degree in Computational Biology, Biostatistics, Bioinformatics, or relevant fields

  • The successful candidate will have a solid background in bioinformatics, statistics and computational biology, expertise in statistical and bioinformatics software and an ability to work in a multidisciplinary research environment
  • Experience in pipeline development and data management
  • Demonstrable expertise implementing algorithms for sequence alignment, sequence clustering, and distance calculations will be preferred. Extensive experience with Python, R or similar programming languages is required.
  • Experience in RNAseq or proteomics (experimental design and analyzing data sets) is desirable.

Experience in modelling of biological processes is appreciated.

  • The candidate should have documented research experience over the past two years.
  • Good documentation skills as well as proficiency in both spoken and written English are required.
  • The individual should be highly driven and be able to work independently, as well as be able and willing to efficiently communicate and work with other members of the team.
  • Personal suitability is of great importance when evaluating the applicants

Application process
An employment application must contain the following documents in English or Swedish:

  1. Curriculum vitae (max 2 pages)
  2. List of publications
  3. Personal motivation letter, explaining your research interests. (max 1 page)
  4. Contact information of at least two references

At Karolinska Institutet a 6-month trial period is required for all permanent appointments.
