Karolinska Institutet, Department of Neurobiology, Care Sciences and Society, Division of Clinical Geriatrics

The Department of Neurobiology, Care Sciences and Society (NVS) conducts world leading research in aging, dementia, epidemiology and care sciences. This research extends from basic molecular and cell levels to clinical research and societal studies. NVS educates almost a third of KI students at basic and advanced levels. The Department has approximately 540 employees and a revenue 2023 of 530 million SEK. It comprises seven divisions, located at Campus Flemingsberg and Campus Solna.

Division
The division of Clinical Geriatric conducts research focusing on cognitive impairment, dementia, and other aging related disorders, and education, among other medical graduates. The research is multi- faceted and is in close collaboration with leading institutions and clinics worldwide. The research is clinically oriented with an emphasis on diagnosis, prevention and treatment. Some focus areas include lifestyle factors, prevention and treatment studies, imaging methods, and registry studies. The activities are multidisciplinary and include medical research and research in the specialty engines psychology, physiotherapy, occupational therapy, speech therapy and nursing.

Research group
Research assistant to be hired will be working in the research group of Professor Agneta Nordberg Translational Molecular Imaging which consists of a multi-disciplinary team at the forefront of translational Alzheimer´s disease (AD) research using cutting-edge technology with aims to develop new diagnostic biomarkers and new treatment strategies in AD.

Project
We are inviting applications for a 6-month position as research assistant in the area of characterization new PET tracers for  Tau imaging in Alzheimer disease and other tauopathies. The project will give you the opportunity to work under supervision, on projects aligned with the goals of the group. The project has a focus on performing binding assay on brain homogenate as well as autoradiography on large frozen brain sections using tritiated PET tracers. The aim of the project is to characterized in vitro a new PET tau ligand and compared it with already characterized PET tracers in Alzheimer disease and other tauopathies.

Duties
Duties involve binding assay studies on brain homogenate, autoradiography on large frozen brain section and paraffin section, as well as statistical analyses of the results using graphpad prism software. The duties also involve participating and presenting progress updates in internal group meetings, as well as contributing to writing manuscripts for peer-reviewed journals and presenting at international conferences when required.

Entry requirements
The candidate should have basic educational background in pharmacology or biomedicine, including coursework in chemistry, neuroscience, pharmacokinetics and statistics. The candidate should be self- motivated, with a strong interest in research, and able to work both independently as well as being a good team player with excellent communication skills in English (written and verbal) and if possible communication skills in Swedish. The candidate should be reliable, detail-oriented and collaborative, and with an ability to work without requiring extensive training or the need for close supervision.

Knowledge and previous experience in neurobiology research , as well as knowledge and/or practical experience in binding assay, autoradiography, work with radioactive compounds  as well as knowledge of graphpad prism software are especially valuable.

Application process
The application is to be submitted through the Varbi recruitment system and must contain the following documents in English or Swedish:

  1. A complete curriculum vitae, including education, work experience and academic merits
