Karolinska Institutet, Institutionen för onkologi-patologi, Forskargrupp Nistér

At the Department of Oncology-Pathology basic, translational and clinical research and educational activities related to cancer is carried out. Approximately 300 people from over 40 nations are currently working at the department. About 30 research groups with various cancer research profiles are involved and we have around 110 PhD students. The Department of Oncology-Pathology is responsible for undergraduate courses in Pathology, Oncology and Forensic Medicine for medical students, as well as for Tumor biology courses for biomedicine students and Pathology courses for opticians.

Division
The department of Oncology - Pathology and the research team of Joseph Carlson offers an opportunity for postdoctoral studies in the field of translational cancer research. The project goal is to identify key mechanisms of tumor cell-microenvironment communication that regulate invasion, metastasis, and drug responses in epithelial ovarian cancer and high grade uterine sarcomas. The project will investigate how the cancer-specific genetic alterations and transcriptional programs relate to the microenvironment-dependent dynamics of e.g. signaling receptors, adhesion molecules, transmembrane proteinases, and cytoskeleton. This will be done by integrating genetic, proteomic & clinical sarcoma and ovarian cancer data with hypothesis-driven functional and molecular mechanistic research. State-of-the-art molecular biology, proteomics and functional genetic approaches including the most relevant cellular, ex vivo and in vivo models, as well as clinical human tissue material will be utilized for this research. By identifying key molecules and mechanisms in tumor dynamics, metastasis, and drug responses, the project will contribute to the development of new prognostic indicators and strategies for better treatments.

Duties
We are looking for an ambitious researcher with strong enthusiasm towards science to complement our interdisciplinary team. A successful candidate has a PhD degree awarded within the past two years, and strong background in molecular cell biology, biochemistry, genetics and/or cancer biology. Basic or advanced understanding of bioinformatics/computational biology is considered as an asset. Practical experience in cell culture, protein analytic techniques, basic or advanced molecular biology techniques, and analysis of cancer cell phenotypes using immunofluorescence and immunohistochemistry methods are routine for an experimentally oriented applicant. As the project focus on patient-derived material, cancer drug resistance and tumor propagation, experience in 3D and ex vivo cell culture models, or alternatively in cancer genetics for a systems biology oriented applicant, are considered as substantial merits. Knowhow in cell signaling, membrane trafficking, cytoskeleton and metabolic pathways is a plus.

We offer an international research environment with state-of-the-art facilities. The hired applicant will be working jointly between the research team of Joseph Carlson and the group of Kaisa Lehti. Applicants are expected to have full professional proficiency in English.

Entry requirements
Scholarships for carrying out postdoctoral research may be granted to persons living in other countries who come to Sweden with the intention of only staying in Sweden for all or part of their postdoctoral education at KI. Persons who are resident in Sweden and/or have carried out all or part of their academic education at KI or some other educational institution in Sweden cannot be considered for scholarships from KI. The head of the department determines whether their previous training and scholarly qualifications correspond to a Swedish PhD or higher.

Type of scholarship
A scholarship for carrying out postdoctoral research can be granted for a maximum of two years within a four year period following the receipt of a doctoral degree or equivalent. This educational scholarship is tax-exempt.

The amount is set for twelve months at a time and is paid out on a monthly basis.

Application process
An application must contain the following documents in English:

  • Curriculum vitae and qualifications, presented in accordance with Karolinska Institutet’s qualifications portfolio (http://ki.se/meritportfolj)
  • A brief letter of motivation where specific expertise is highlighted, and compliance with the entry requirements for scholarship is summarized (no more than one page)
  • A summary of PhD studies (and current work, no more than one page)
  • A complete list of publications (please do NOT upload full research papers or theses)
  • Verifications for crediting of illness, military service, work for labour unions or student organisations, parental leave or similar circumstances
  • Contact details for two reference persons

The application is to be submitted on the Varbi recruitment system.
