Do you want to contribute to top quality medical research?

Pain is a common feature of various cancers. Cancer cells actively secrete factors that promote the neuronal infiltration of tumors. Inhibiting the electrical signals of tumor-infiltrating neurons can help decrease tumor growth, but the specific mechanisms through which neurons regulate cancer cell survival remain undetermined. Building on our recent findings published in Nature (2022, PMID: 36323780), the lab of Dr. Sébastien Talbot is seeking to recruit a postdoctoral fellow to study how tumor-innervating nociceptors—typically considered bystanders—control malignant cells' immune escape behaviors and their resistance to therapy.

Candidate Profile

We are looking for a candidate with:

  • A track record of high-impact research publications conducted in fast-paced and competitive research environments.
  • Training in neuro-immunology, tumor immunology, or neuroscience (sensory neurons).

To be qualified for employment as a postdoctoral fellow, you must have obtained a doctorate or have equivalent scientific competence within the last four years. Applicants who have not completed their doctorate by the end of the application period may also apply, provided that all requirements for the degree are met before the intended date of employment. This must be substantiated by a statement from your main supervisor, director, or equivalent.

Desired Qualities

  • Teamwork and Collaboration: Skills in cooperative work, openness to feedback, and effective communication.
  • Passion and Curiosity: Genuine interest in the research topic and eagerness to explore.
  • Advanced Knowledge and Skills: Expertise of relevant research methods (single-cell RNA sequencing, spatial transcriptomics, bioinformatics, molecular biology, pain behavioral assays, flow cytometry, qPCR, calcium microscopy, electrophysiology) and theories.
  • Critical Thinking and Problem-Solving: Ability to interpret complex information and resolve research issues.
  • Resilience and Persistence: Determination to overcome research challenges and setbacks.
  • Adaptability: Flexibility to manage changing conditions and new challenges.
  • Communication Skills: Ability to effectively disseminate research findings verbally and in writing.
  • Ethical Awareness: Adherence to ethical guidelines and regulations in research.
  • Project Management: Competence in managing research projects, including time management and organization.
  • Interdisciplinary Understanding: Grasp of related disciplines (pain, neuroscience, immunology, and immunotherapy) to encourage innovative and broader thinking.

Duties

  • Develop your research skills.
  • Discuss your knowledge and research with interested faculty and graduate students.
  • Publish results obtained during your tenure in appropriate journals and other recognized media.
  • Help train and supervise graduate and undergraduate students in the laboratory.

Entry requirements

Scholarships for postdoctoral qualification can be established for foreign researchers who place their qualifications in Sweden. The purpose of scholarships for postdoctoral qualification is to promote internationalization and contribute to research qualification after a doctorate or equivalent.
A scholarship for carrying out postdoctoral research can be granted for a maximum of two years within a four year period following the receipt of a doctoral degree or equivalent.
To be eligible for a postdoctoral scholarship, the person must have obtained a doctorate or a foreign degree deemed to be equivalent to a doctorate. Applicants who have not completed a doctorate at the end of the application period may also apply, provided that all requirements for a completed degree are met before the (intended) start date of the post doctoral education.

The head of the department determines whether their previous training and scholarly qualifications correspond to a Swedish doctorate or higher.

Location: Biomedicum, Campus Solna.

Type of scholarship

The amount is tax free and it is set for twelve months at a time, paid out on a six months basis. In exceptional cases, shorter periods may be acceptable.

Application process

An application must contain the following documents in English or Swedish:

  • A complete curriculum vitae, including date of the thesis defence, title of the thesis, previous academic positions, academic title, current position, academic distinctions, and committee work
  • A complete list of publications
  • A summary of current work (no more than one page)

The application is to be submitted on the Varbi recruitment system.
