Do you want to contribute to improving human health?

Research at the Division of Molecular Metabolism aims at understanding the regulation of mitochondrial function and the role of mitochondrial dysfunction in disease and ageing. Using patient material and different animal models, our overall aim is to get insights into disease pathophysiology and to develop novel treatments. We are currently seeking 1-2 highly motivated postdoctoral researchers to join the research group of Anna Wredenberg.

Wredenberg group

Our research spans basic and translational aspects of mitochondrial functions, ranging from mitochondrial gene expression to understanding the molecular consequences of metabolic derangements in patients with mitochondrial disease. For this, we use a combination of genetic and biochemical approaches on patient materials, genetically modified fruit fly (Drosophila melanogaster), and mouse (Mus musculus) models. Additionally, we are interested in how mitochondria function within the metabolic system.

Division of Molecular Metabolism

The Division of Molecular Metabolism, Department of Medical Biochemistry and Biophysics, is located at the newly built and modern laboratory Biomedicum at Solna campus of Karolinska Institutet. Our research covers biochemical and genetic studies of patients with inherited diseases as well as basic scientific approaches to understand the regulation of mitochondrial metabolism. We offer an outstanding research environment and a close interaction between basic science and clinical science and diagnostics at the Centre for Inherited Metabolic Diseases (CMMS) at Karolinska University Hospital, Stockholm, Sweden. Excellent access to the most advanced resources in molecular and cell biology is available at the department and at the national core facilities at the Science for Life Laboratory.

Duties

Mitochondrial dysfunction is a hallmark in a variety of rare and common diseases and is heavily implicated in age-associated diseases and the natural ageing process. As postdoctoral researcher, you will investigate cellular rescue mechanisms of mitochondrial dysfunction and the accumulation of mtDNA mutations. The Wredenberg group uses biochemistry, molecular biology and modern omics approaches to understand the molecular processes that underly the progression of mitochondrial dysfunction and ageing. In addition, in vivo modelling using fly and mouse models, including conditional knockout strains, will be implemented in this project.

Your profile

We invite applications from enthusiastic and motivated individuals with a PhD in molecular biology or genetics. Experience in mitochondrial research is not required, whereas experience in biochemistry, molecular biology, mouse genetics and different -omics methods is of advantage. Candidates with experience in handling big data and bioinformatics are encouraged to apply. Strong documentation skills and proficiency in spoken and written English are essential. Successful candidates should be able and willing to work collaboratively within a team to pursue their research. Personal suitability is of great importance when evaluating the applicants.

Entry requirements

Postdoctoral scholarship

Scholarships for postdoctoral qualification can be established for foreign researchers who place their qualifications in Sweden. The purpose of scholarships for postdoctoral qualification is to promote internationalization and contribute to research qualification after a doctorate or equivalent.
A scholarship for carrying out postdoctoral research can be granted for a maximum of two years within a four year period following the receipt of a doctoral degree or equivalent.
To be eligible for a postdoctoral scholarship, the person must have obtained a doctorate or a foreign degree deemed to be equivalent to a doctorate. Applicants who have not completed a doctorate at the end of the application period may also apply, provided that all requirements for a completed degree are met before the (intended) start date of the post doctoral education.

The head of the department determines whether their previous training and scholarly qualifications correspond to a Swedish doctorate or higher.

Type of scholarship

The amount is tax free and it is set for twelve months at a time, paid out on a six months basis. In exceptional cases, shorter periods may be acceptable.

Postdoctoral employment

To be eligible for employment as a postdoctor a doctoral degree or a foreign degree deemed to be equivalent to a doctoral degree is required. This eligibility requirement must be fulfilled at the latest at the time of the employment decision. It is considered as an advantage if you have completed your doctoral degree within the last three years, if there are special reasons, your degree may have been completed earlier.

What do we offer?
