The Department of Biosciences and Nutrition performs research and education in several areas of medical sciences including cancer biology, aging, molecular endocrinology, functional genomics, systems biology, structural biology, protein biochemistry, immunology, and nutrition. It offers an excellent international research and working environment, including around 200 scientists, students, administrative and technical personnel. The Department resides in Neo at Campus Flemingsberg, a biomedical research building, aimed at being a creative and open environment that enables meetings, synergies, and exploration of areas of mutual interest across disciplines.

Do you want to contribute to top quality medical research?

Are you fascinated by the link between aging and cancer? Are you interested in exploring how senescent cells influence tumor initiation, progression, and response to therapy? Join the Pietrocola Lab at the Department of Biosciences and Nutrition. We are an international, multi-disciplinary team that shares a common interest in studying the molecular mechanisms underlying the pathogenesis of age-related disorders, with a primary focus on cancer.

Division

The Pietrocola Lab focuses on studying the fundamental mechanisms underlying aging and age-associated disorders, with a strong emphasis on cellular senescence. Currently, the lab comprises two postdoctoral researchers and one PhD student. Our projects cover a wide range of areas, including the development of innovative immunotherapy approaches to target senescent cells in diseases and the discovery of geroprotectors for disease prevention and treatment.

Within the lab, our objective is to cultivate a stimulating environment that promotes synergy and collaboration. Additionally, our research group is part of a larger "Aging and Cancer" space, which consists of other teams within the department. This setup facilitates new collaborations, joint events and sharing of expertise.

Duties

We are currently seeking a Postdoctoral Researcher to join the research group of Federico Pietrocola. The focus of this position is to investigate the connection between aging and cancer, with a specific emphasis on understanding the impact of cellular senescence on the biology of lung cancer. The primary objective of the project is to explore how senescent cells in the microenvironment influence the host immune response, tumor progression, and the response to anti-cancer immunotherapy.

To successfully accomplish these goals, the candidate will have access to cutting-edge murine models of disease and local facilities equipped for high-throughput genomics, flow cytometry, and imaging analysis. Furthermore, the candidate will have the opportunity to collaborate with internationally renowned scientists specializing in the fields of cellular senescence and tumor immunology.

We are seeking a talented and highly motivated scientist who possesses a doctoral degree and a strong background in Cancer Biology. Previous experience working with animal models, particularly mouse models, and murine tumor models is a mandatory requirement. Prior knowledge in immunology and tumor immunology will be highly regarded during the selection process. Evaluation criteria will also include personal skills such as motivation, independence, and the ability to work effectively within a team.

Entry requirements

Scholarships for postdoctoral qualification can be established for foreign researchers who place their qualifications in Sweden. The purpose of scholarships for postdoctoral qualification is to promote internationalization and contribute to research qualification after a doctorate or equivalent.

A scholarship for carrying out postdoctoral research can be granted for a maximum of two years within a four year period following the receipt of a doctoral degree or equivalent.
To be eligible for a postdoctoral scholarship, the person must have obtained a doctorate or a foreign degree deemed to be equivalent to a doctorate. Applicants who have not completed a doctorate at the end of the application period may also apply, provided that all requirements for a completed degree are met before the (intended) start date of the post doctoral education.

The head of the department determines whether their previous training and scholarly qualifications correspond to a Swedish doctorate or higher.

Location: Flemmingsberg

Type of scholarship

The amount is tax free and it is set for twelve months at a time, paid out on a six months basis. In exceptional cases, shorter periods may be acceptable.

Application process

An application must contain the following documents in English or Swedish:

  • A complete curriculum vitae, including date of the thesis defence, title of the thesis, previous academic positions, academic title, current position, academic distinctions, and committee work
  • A complete list of publications
  • A summary of current work (no more than one page)

The application is to be submitted on the Varbi recruitment system.
