The Division

Clinical pharmacology is a medical speciality with a broad consultation service to the health care sector. The corresponding academic discipline within Karolinska Institutet is heavily engaged in not only research related to drug treatment in clinical practice, but also teaching in many different university programs including the postgraduate level. The fundamental purpose of clinical pharmacology is to promote the rational use of drugs with regards to patient safety and cost-benefit, and to individualise treatment in relation to underlying disorders and constitutive factors. Precision Medicine, with an emphasis on genetic factors of importance for the individual design of drug therapy, is therefore a classical theme in clinical pharmacology research. We work by bringing both multi-professional teams together (e.g. physicians, pharmacists, bioanalytical experts, mathematical modelers and epidemiologists) and - at the clinical level - act as an interdisciplinary bridge between different therapeutic areas.

Your mission

As a postdoc in pharmacogenomics and bioinformatics you will join a team with ongoing research that aims for a better understanding of the genetic impact on drug treatment, and the ultimate goal to develop predictive tools that helps to optimise drug treatment for the individual patient. At present, we work on classical drugs used againt breast cancer but is already evident that there are many applications in other diseases. More specifically, the expertise in bioinformatics will help to analyse next generation sequencing data and the corresponding impact on pharmacokinetics and pharmacodynamics. This will depend on the development of computational tools that predict the functional impact of novel mutations on protein structure and function. Validation and refinement of these predictions are required by phenotype measurements, usually pharmacokinetic analyses related to concentration determinations of drug substances and corresponding metabolites. The research is carried out in a multi-professional environment and in the expert role of this postdoctoral position, a significant transfer of knowledge to colleagues is expected both through direct research collaboration and more formal teaching sessions. In addition, pending a formalised agreement with the Center of Bioinformatics and Biostatistics, Karolinska South Campus/Flemingsberg a part-time role as mentor in bioinformatics to researchers/research students outside Clinical pharmacology may be considered.

Your profile

A PhD from clinical or biomedical research with a strong emphasis on bioinformatics is required.
A profound knowledge in drug metabolism and the corresponding population-based variability, genetic polymorphisms of clinical significance to drug treatment, is expected as well as advanced knowledge in computational methods including modeling of the functional impact of genetic variability and rare mutations.

Analytical skills and great extent of independent work within these areas are therefore expected. -Excellent teaching skills and student mentoring means high standards of spoken and written English.

The research is mainly a team-driven effort, but also with many external contacts, where a high level of social- and collaborative skills is required.

Qualified to be employed as a postdoctor is one who has obtained a doctorate or has equivalent scientific competence. It is considered as an advantage if you have completed your doctoral degree within the last three years, if there are special reasons, your degree may have been completed earlier. Applicants who have not completed a doctorate at the end of the application period may also apply, provided that all requirements for a completed degree are met before the (intended) date of employment. This must be substantiated by the applicant's main supervisor, director or equivalent.
