A doctoral student is admitted to third-cycle/doctoral education. A doctoral education consists of supervised research, combined with courses and other educational activities. An individual study plan is established for each doctoral student. For a doctoral degree, the equivalent of four years of full-time doctoral education is required.
Department of Medicine, Huddinge
The Department of Medicine at Huddinge comprises of seven units, three research centers and around 70 independent research groups. The Center for Infectious Medicine (CIM) is a research unit within the Department of Medicine Huddinge with a focus on translational studies of the human immune system and infection-immunity in humans
Research group
The Ph.D. studies will be conducted in Prof. M. Flodström-Tullberg’s research group (https://ki.se/en/medh/malin-flodstrom-tullberg-group). The research performed in the laboratory of Prof. M. Flodström-Tullberg (MFT lab) focuses on the etiology and pathogenesis of the autoimmune disease type 1 diabetes. The group has a special interest in common human viruses (enteroviruses) associated with the development of human type 1 diabetes and conducts studies on mechanisms by which these viruses can cause beta cell destruction. The group is also involved in efforts to make novel enterovirus vaccines and the testing of antivirals for their efficacy in blocking enterovirus replication. The group is a member of several international research networks including nPOD-V and Therdiab. The MFT lab employs experimental in vitro and in vivo models and uses advanced molecular-, proteomic-, cellular- and immunological techniques to study interactions between the insulin producing beta cell, the host immune system and viruses of relevance inthe etiology and pathogenesis of type 1 diabetes.
The doctoral student project and the duties of the doctoral student
In this Ph.D. project the student will use in vitro and in vivo models to examine whether novel enterovirus vaccines and antiviral treatments can prevent infections and clinically relevant diseases induced by enterovirus infections. Methods include experimental cell and in vivo models, vaccinations and drug administration, assays for monitoring
