Karolinska Institutet, NVS

The Department of Neurobiology, Care Sciences and Society (NVS) conducts world leading research in aging, dementia, epidemiology and care sciences. This research extends from basic molecular and cell levels to clinical research and societal studies. NVS educates almost a third of KI students at basic and advanced levels. The Department has approximately 540 employees and a revenue 2023 of 530 million SEK. It comprises seven divisions, located at Campus Flemingsberg and Campus Solna.

Division
The Division of Neurogeriatrics consists of 16 research groups and approximately 90 employees whereof approximately 20 are PhD students. Our research is focused on Alzheimer disease and other neurodegenerative diseases, and is strongly oriented towards translating findings from basic research into clinical practice.

Research group and work description
The Andressoo laboratory’s goal is to develop novel therapeutic approaches by creating tools, which allow increasing endogenous gene expression. Current pharmacopoeia enables to inhibit or enhance function of less than 700 human proteins, which cluster into a few “drugable” protein families. An ability to enhance the function of any gene or pathway of interest would likely be very useful and would allow to define what genes and pathways, when, where and how should be enhanced to model and treat neurodegenerative disease.
Recently we have made great progress in this direction by showing that it is possible to use gene editing to conditionally upregulate endogenous gene gene Knock Up) .
Associate Professor Jaan-Olle Andressoo has a shared position at Karolinska Institutet, Campus Flemingsberg and at the University of Helsinki, Finland. In 2016, his team received ERC CoG Grant (FI) and Center of Innovative Medicine Young Investigator Grant (SWE) for developing the above described gene Knock Up concepts further. Very recently the team has generated several new knock-in mouse lines, which need to be characterized using existing CRE lines.
With those mouse lines we seek to understand AD better and define drug targets and we now want to expand the group with a one year postdoc position with possiblility of extension.

The lab aims to establish a therapeutic pipeline from identified targets using viral delivery of specific CRISPR system into adult brain.
Besides the analysis of mouse models, the postdoctoral fellow is expected to have expertise in cell culture techniques, and an understanding or a strong drive to understand RNA-SEQ and bioinformatics analysis.
Finally, the laboratory has an ongoing clinical collaboration for analysis of body liquids from children with ADHD and ASD spectrum disorders. The postdoctoral fellow is expected to coordinate sample collection and analysis, analyse patient questionnaires and coordinate the analysis of body liquids together with the team in Finland and relevant core facilities.
The responsibilities also involve collaboration with other team members and groups and supervision of a PhD and/or master student(s) and some lab-management tasks.
The Andressoo laboratory is located at Campus Flemingsberg, but part of the research activities are carried out at Campus Solna.
The position offers diverse tasks involving projects ranging from in vitro analysis to patient-related research. Moreover, it offers a high level of independence and a high degree of freedom to develop an own line of research within the laboratory’s projects. The successful applicant will gain valuable experience in the organizational and management responsibilities required for running independent research in future.

Entry requirements
Eligible candidates have acquired their PhD degree no longer than 7 years from the application time. Candidate who acquired their PhD degree earlier can be eligible under certain circumstances.
The Jaan-Olle Andressoo laboratory is looking for a postdoctoral fellow with the following qualifications: A Ph.D. in neuroscience or similar, preferably with good knowledge in neurodegenerative diseases. The successful applicant is experienced in molecular biology and has thorough theoretical and practical experience in animal experimentation, including behavioral studies and histological and stereology analysis. Ideally, the applicant has experience with stereotactic injections. Training or experience in cell culture work or alternative models like C. elegans, and “omics” analysis are meriting.
The applicant has a strong drive for laboratory work, an innovative attitude and a high level of independence. The projects are carried out in close collaboration with different collaboration partners. Therefore, a strong collaborative attitude is very important. For the successful candidate, thorough knowledge in neuroscience is essential; knowledge in neurodegenerative diseases is a plus. Excellent spoken and written English skills are a required for the position. Good language skills in Swedish are beneficial, but not required.
