Karolinska Institutet, Dept of Medicine/Center for Infectious Medicine (CIM)

Department of Medicine, Huddinge
The Department of Medicine at Huddinge comprises seven units, three research centers and around 70 independent research groups. The Center for Infectious Medicine (CIM) is a research unit within the Department of Medicine Huddinge with a focus on translational studies of the human immune system and infection-immunity in humans.

Research group
The postdoc project will be conducted in Prof. M. Flodström-Tullberg’s research group (http://ki.se/en/medh/malin-flodstrom-tullberg-group). The research performed in the laboratory of Prof. M. Flodström-Tullberg (MFT lab) focuses on the etiology and pathogenesis of the autoimmune disease type 1 diabetes. The group has a special interest in common human viruses (enteroviruses) associated with development of type 1 diabetes in humans and conducts studies on mechanisms by which these viruses can cause beta cell destruction. The group is also involved in efforts to make novel enterovirus vaccines and is a member of several national research networks including nPOD-V and Therdiab. The MFT lab employs experimental in vitro and in vivo models and uses advanced molecular-, proteomic-, cellular- and immunological techniques to study interactions between the insulin producing beta cell, the host immune system and viruses of relevance for the etiology and pathogenesis of type 1 diabetes.

Projects
The research consists of two parts, one which is related to studies on immune responses to enterovirus infections. The other part focuses on identifying biomarkers for pancreatic beta-cell damage and stress, and is part of a larger project conducted in a close collaboration with the research group headed by Prof. Susanne Gabrielsson, Department of Medicine, Solna, Karolinska Institutet. The first project is supported by the Swedish Heart and Lung foundation and the other project is one of four translational research projects supported by the strategic alliance between Karolinska Institutet and Johnson & Johnson Innovation.

Duties
We are looking for a highly motivated and skilled person to join our efforts in using various in vivo and in vitro disease models to study immune responses to enteroviruses and to identify biomarkers for virus-induced type 1 diabetes. The work includes but is not limited to studies of experimental disease models and the use of bioinformatics methods to analyze transcriptomic and proteomic data obtained via RNAseq and mass spectrometry. The successful candidate is expected to participate in the scientific design and establishment of experimental protocols, generate and analyze data, present and interpret results, write scientific reports and articles in English. The tasks may also include project administration and training of masters and/or Ph.D. students.

Qualifications
Required: A PhD (third-cycle) degree in biomedicine or biology, or comparable. Documented experiences in working with in vitro and in vivo models, extracellular vesicles, miRNA extraction and analysis, proteomics and bioinformatics. Applicants must possess excellent communication skills and be able to interact and work efficiently in a team. Excellent spoken and written English is required.

Desirable: Experience in handling human tissues for ex vivo cellular assays.

A person is eligible for a position as Postdoctoral Researcher if s/he has obtained a PhD no more than seven years before the last date of employment as postdoc. The term can be extended under special circumstances.

Application process

An application must contain the following documents in English:

  1. Curriculum vitae and qualifications, presented in accordance with Karolinska Institutet’s qualifications portfolio (http://ki.se/meritportfolj)
  2. A complete list of publications
  3. A summary of current work (no more than one page)
  4. Verifications for crediting of illness, military service, work for labour unions or student organisations, parental leave or similar circumstances
  5. Verification from the thesis defense committee or the equivalent (only if the thesis defense is scheduled within three months after the application deadline)

The application is to be submitted through the Varbi recruitment system.
