AIMES – Center for the Advancement of Integrated Medical and Engineering Sciences is established interdisciplinary research center co-affiliated between Karolinska Institutet (KI) and the KTH Royal Institute of Technology (KTH). Research at AIMES is characterized by intimate interactions between pre-clinical and clinical scientists and researchers with natural sciences and engineering backgrounds. Biomedical research in infection and neuroscience is addressed by the development of cutting-edge approaches based on Organic Bioelectronics, Organ-on-Chip technology, and Tissue Microbiology, which combines expertise in electroactive polymers, chemistry, microfluidics, neurobiology, microbiology, physiology, pathology and intravital imaging. Other areas of research include renewable biomaterials, sensor technologies and anti-fouling surfaces. AIMES has an explicit aim to translate scientific findings to societal use via strong interactions with external stakeholders. AIMES is located in Biomedicum, KI Campus Solna. AIMES is hosted at KI by the Department of Neuroscience, world-leaders in research on the function of the nervous system in health and disease. At KTH, AIMES is hosted by the Department of Fibre and Polymer Technology, the largest academic institution on native and synthetic polymers in Sweden.
The research team of Prof. Odnevall within AIMES focuses on interfacial processes taking place on metallic surfaces in biologically relevant environments. The team is seeking a Post-Doctoral Researcher with a background in microbiology and/or toxicology for in-depth fundamental studies of the interactions occurring between bacterial cells/biofilms/biomolecules and metallic surfaces of nanoparticles, biomaterials and antimicrobial high touch surfaces. Using state-of-the-art analytical, microbiological and toxicological techniques, the successful applicant will assess these interactions from the perspectives of surface chemistry, biotransformation, biodissolution and toxicity. The research will be conducted in close collaboration with other researchers at KI, and the KTH team.
To be eligible for employment as a postdoctor a doctoral degree or a foreign degree deemed to be equivalent to a doctoral degree is required. This eligibility requirement must be fulfilled at the latest at the time of the employment decision. It is considered as an advantage if you have completed your doctoral degree within the last three years, if there are special reasons, your degree may have been completed earlier.
Qualified for this position is a candidate who has a PhD in microbiology and/or toxicology or equivalent research expertise. The candidate must have research expertise and experience in the defined research field, evidenced by scientific publications and prior positions, a proven ability to work in a team with experts in other disciplines and expertise, and experience of recruiting research funding. The candidate must have documented competence and experience using microbiological and cell toxicity techniques (e.g. bacterial/cell culture, cell staining methods, cell imaging). Excellent spoken and written English is a requirement, as are documented skills in writing of advanced publications and oral presentations. The candidate must further have a very good experience of independent laboratory work and abilities to work in a team.
