Do you want to contribute to top quality medical research?

The Department of Laboratory Medicine consists of seven divisions and is active in many areas of Laboratory Medicine. The department is involved in advanced basic scientific, clinical, and epidemiological research and is one of the largest departments of education at Karolinska Institutet. A postdoctoral position (Scholarship) is now available at the Division of Clinical Physiology.

Your role

The project is focused on the development of technologies and tools around novel proteolysis-targeting chimeras (PROTACs) and get a deeper knowledge in ubiquitin biology. The aim of the project is to create a foundation for PROTAC molecule development that can be applied to the discovery of novel proof-of-concept therapeutics for disease. The candidate is expected to actively participate in and lead research projects under the supervision of Drs. Mikael Altun and Nicholas Valerie at the Division of Clinical Physiology. In addition, the candidate may participate in and support other research activities within the division to enhance scientific output.

Your profile

We are looking for a highly motivated candidate with a strong background in ubiquitin-mediated degradation and related biology. Knowledge and experience in cellular/molecular biology, biochemical techniques, and chemical biology is an advantage. Excellent written and spoken English skills are required.

Location and Research Group

The postdoctoral position is available in the Division of Clinical Physiology, Department of Laboratory Medicine in Huddinge (KI South Campus). Our research aims to understand the role of the ubiquitin proteasome system under different physiological conditions from a basic biology perspective and how they relate to human health and disease. We also strive to create translational tools for drug discovery applications that exploit the cellular degradation machinery and provide a basis for therapies of the future. Our research is conducted in close collaboration with the Karolinska University Hospital.

Entry requirements

Scholarships for postdoctoral qualification can be established for foreign researchers who place their qualifications in Sweden. The purpose of scholarships for postdoctoral qualification is to promote internationalization and contribute to research qualification after a doctorate or equivalent.
A scholarship for carrying out postdoctoral research can be granted for a maximum of two years within a four-year period following the receipt of a doctoral degree or equivalent.
To be eligible for a postdoctoral scholarship, the person must have obtained a doctorate, or a foreign degree deemed to be equivalent to a doctorate in biotechnology, as well as a proven track record as demonstrated by original research publications within the field of ubiquitin biology. Applicants who have not completed a doctorate at the end of the application period may also apply, provided that all requirements for a completed degree are met before the (intended) start date of the postdoctoral education.

The head of the department determines whether their previous training and scholarly qualifications correspond to a Swedish doctorate or higher.

Type of scholarship

The amount is tax free and it is set for twelve months at a time, paid out on a six months basis. In exceptional cases, shorter periods may be acceptable.

Application process

An application must contain the following documents in English or Swedish:

  • A complete curriculum vitae, including date of the thesis defence, title of the thesis, previous academic positions, academic title, current position, academic distinctions, and committee work
  • A complete list of publications
  • A summary of current work (no more than one page)

The application is to be submitted via the Varbi recruitment system.

Candidates are welcome to apply until 1 July 2022 at the latest. Applications will be screened continuously.

The expected start date is august 2022, or as agreed upon during negotiation.
