Do you want to contribute to top quality medical research?

We are seeking a highly motivated and ambitious scientist to join the research group of Eva Hellström Lindberg (https://staff.ki.se/people/eva-hellstrom-lindberg) as a Postdoctoral Fellow. The group is located at Center of Hematology and Regenerative medicine (HERM) (http://ki.se/en/medh/herm), a translational research environment focusing on hematology, stem cell biology, immunology and cellular therapies

Your mission

The MDS research group conducts translational research on myelodysplastic syndromes, with a particular focus on cellular and molecular pathways underlying aberrant stem cell function and ineffective erythropoiesis. The basis for most studies is molecularly annotated primary patient samples from our large MDS biobank from the MDS Clinic and clinical trials within the Nordic MDS Group. Recent studies from our group encompass Rasmussen, et al., Leukemia 2022, Bernard, et al, Nature Medicine, 2020, Elvarsdottir, et al., Leukemia 2020, Shiozawa, et al., Blood 2017, Mortera Blanco, et al., Blood 2017, Dimitriou, et al., Oncotarget 2016, Malcovati, et al, Blood 2015, Woll, et al., Cancer Cell 2014, Nikpour, et al. Leukemia 2013.  Projects are pursued within the frame of a major collaborative research grant from the Wallenberg Foundation and a large international network

The project will focus on MDS with ring sideroblasts (MDS-RS), largely caused by de novo mutations in the splice factor gene SF3B1. The disease leads to defective erythropoiesis with limited treatment options. This translational research project will explore cellular and molecular mechanisms underlying defective erythropoiesis in MDS-RS towards the identification of novel targetable pathways to minimize the disease’s impact. A particular focus is to understand the competitive advantage of mutated stem cells in the human niche. The post doc is expected to manage a combination of advanced flow cytometry and cell and molecular biology techniques, high throughput characterization approaches, and single-cell sequencing techniques, and xenograft transplantation. These techniques will require advanced data analysis and bioinformatic competence.

Your profile

Applicants must have a PhD in medicine, biotechnology, molecular biology, cell biology or related fields. Candidates with a background in mouse model work and / or previous experience with flow cytometry for analysis of primary hematopoietic cells are highly encouraged to apply.
We are looking for a talented and enthusiastic researcher with a strong personal drive and motivation towards developing into an independent scientist. You should be instrumental in the elaboration of scientific hypothesis, experimental design, experimentation, data analysis and presentation/publication of results. You must be a good team player but still retain independence to explore your results from a conceptual standpoint. You will be responsible for your own academic, research and administrative activities, adapt existing and develop new scientific techniques, test hypotheses, and analyze data from a variety of sources. You should be innovative and eager to solve problems, as well as contribute actively to other projects in the research team.
Applicant should be fluent in English (written and spoken). Emphasis will be placed on scientific excellence and personal suitability.

Besides working on existing lab projects, postdocs are encouraged to start their own new projects that can serve to launch their independent careers in science. Our aim is to provide a supportive environment for development of independent scientists.

Qualified to be employed as a postdoctor is one who has obtained a doctorate or has equivalent scientific competence. It is considered as an advantage if you have completed your doctoral degree within the last three years, if there are special reasons, your degree may have been completed earlier. Applicants who have not completed a doctorate at the end of the application period may also apply, provided that all requirements for a completed degree are met before the (intended) date of employment. This must be substantiated by the applicant's main supervisor, director or equivalent.
