Do you want to contribute to top quality medical research?

The Department of Laboratory Medicine consists of 7 divisions and is active in many areas of Laboratory Medicine. The department is involved in advanced basic scientific, clinical and epidemiological research. The department is one of the largest departments of education at Karolinska Institutet.

A postdoc position (Scholarship) is now available at the at the Division of Clinical Physiology.

Your mission
The project is a collaboration project between Dr. Mikael Altun and the Department of Immunology, Genetics and Pathology at Uppsala University towards the development of technologies and tools around cell cycle control in stem cells. The aim of the project is to create a foundation for development of new therapeutic strategies.

Your profile
Qualified to be employed as a postdoctor is one who has obtained a doctorate or has equivalent scientific competence. Applicants who have not completed a doctorate at the end of the application period may also apply, provided that all requirements for a completed degree are met before the (intended) date of employment. This must be substantiated by the applicant's main supervisor, director or equivalent.

The candidate should have a great understanding of protein biology as well as stem cell biology/regenerative medicine and be highly motivated and passionate about his/her projects. Experience in technology development and an understanding of protein dynamics is required. In addition, competence in high-content imaging acquisition and analysis is preferred. The candidate must possess a robust track record of publications in cell biology with specific focus on protein biology, including protein analyses using mass spectrometry. Demonstrated ability to secure research funding in these fields is favored, although not required. The candidate should have worked in multiple research environments nationally and internationally and demonstrate the ability to effectively collaborate with external research groups. As such, an excellent level of English proficiency, both spoken and written, is also required.

We stress scientific expertise when assessing applicants.

Postdoctoral Scholarships
Scholarships for postdoctoral qualification can be established for foreign researchers who place their qualifications in Sweden. The purpose of scholarships for postdoctoral qualification is to promote internationalization and contribute to research qualification after a doctorate or equivalent.

A scholarship for carrying out postdoctoral research can be granted for a maximum of two years within a four year period following the receipt of a doctoral degree or equivalent.

To be eligible for a postdoctoral scholarship, the person must have obtained a doctorate or a foreign degree deemed to be equivalent to a doctorate. Applicants who have not completed a doctorate at the end of the application period may also apply, provided that all requirements for a completed degree are met before the (intended) start date of the post doctoral education.

The head of the department determines whether their previous training and scholarly qualifications correspond to a Swedish doctorate or higher.

What do we offer?
Karolinska Institutet is one of the world's leading medical universities. Our vision is to pursue the development of knowledge about life and to promote better health for all. At Karolinska Institutet, we conduct innovative medical research and provide the largest range of biomedical education in Sweden. Karolinska Institutet is a state university, which entitles employees to several benefits such as extended holiday and a generous occupational pension. Employees also have free access to our modern gym and receive reimbursements for medical care.

Location and Research Group:
The postdoc position is available at the Division of Clinical Physiology, Department of Laboratory Medicine in Huddinge (KI South Campus, Flemingsberg), in the protein degradation research group led by Dr. Mikael Altun. Our research aims to increase awareness of the link between physical activity and health, and the causes of impaired body function such as muscle wasting during disease or aging. Our research is conducted in close collaboration with the Physiology Department at the Karolinska University Hospital. Traditional metabolic and physiological measurements are combined with molecular analysis (gene and protein expression, by single and global techniques, and integrated bioinformatics) in different tissues as well as in primary cell cultures, combining state-of-art chemical biology and molecular biology tools.
