Do you want to contribute to top quality medical research?

We are looking for an ambitious postdoc with virology, biochemistry and cellular biology laboratory skills to join our team. The research group of Dr. Sara Gredmark-Russ studies different aspects on Tick-borne Encephalitis virus (TBEV) infection. Our goal is to understand the underlying basis for the development of encephalitis in TBEV infection, with the ultimate goal to identify novel therapeutic targets for future treatment of TBE.

Your mission

The postdoc will work in a project with the aim to identify novel human cellular proteins and factors required for TBEV entry and replication using a haploid genetic screening system in human cells. To confirm potential proteins identified in the screen, biochemistry and cellular experiments will be performed, e.g. CRISPR/Cas9 gene knock-out systems, viral mutagenisis and construction of reporter-TBEV viruses, in vitro infections, confocal microscopy, and flow cytometry. As TBEV is a BSL-3 classified agent infection experiments will be performed at BSL-3 laboratories. The post-doc may also be involved in basic immunological studies of the immune response in TBEV-patients, using multidimensional flow cytometry.

The postdoc will be a part of the Center for Infectious Medicine (CIM), Karolinska Institutet, which is a nationally leading and internationally competitive center for human translational immunology and infectious diseases research. The center consists of approximately 25 graduate students and 25 postdocs organized around 15 independent research groups. The project is a close collaboration with Dr. Jonas Klingström, CIM and Dr. Anna Överby Wernstedt, Department of Clinical Microbiology, Umeå University. Parts of the experimental work will be performed in Dr. Anna Överby Wernstedt´s laboratory.

Your profile

Qualified to be employed as a postdoctor is one who has obtained a doctorate or has equivalent scientific competence. Applicants who have not completed a doctorate at the end of the application period may also apply, provided that all requirements for a completed degree are met before the (intended) date of employment. This must be substantiated by the applicant's main supervisor, director or equivalent.

The candidate must hold a PhD equivalent to a Swedish doctoral degree in the field of virology, cellbiology, biochemistry, and / or immunology. The candidate should master cellular biology experiments including in vitro culturing of cells in BSL-2 laboratory (required), experience in in vitro infectious experiments in BSL2-laboratory and/or BSL3-laboratory is a merit. Experience in molecular and cellular biology assays, e.g. cloning experiments, confocal microscopy, flow cytometry, PCR and molecular biology methods are other merits. Further, experience in analysis of large data sets is another merit. The candidate should be self-motivated, have good communications skills and a proven ability to interact effectively and work productively in an interdisciplinary team. Fluency in English is a requirement.
