The Department of Biosciences and Nutrition performs research and education in several areas of medical science including bioorganic chemistry, molecular endocrinology, cancer biology, functional genomics, systems biology, epigenetics, structural biochemistry, cellular virology, and nutrition. Our group is devoted to exploring mechanisms underlying metabolic disorder progression using top tier technologies. We are looking for a highly motivated talent to join our efforts to understand the epigenomic basis of monocyte dysfunctions in human atherosclerosis.

Division
The position will be placed at Department of Biosciences and Nutrition, Karolinska Institutet south campus. The group conducts pre-clinical research for better understanding how the epigenome controls metabolic and inflammatory pathways in the context of obesity, type 2 diabetes, fatty liver disease and atherosclerosis (Fan, et al Nat Med 2016; Drareni, et al Cell Reports 2018; Liang, et al Nat Com 2019). We combine various state-of-the-art next generation sequencing approaches to study disease mechanisms in different levels, from the epigenomic alterations and transcription factor-mediated regulatory networks in the metabolic tissues and cells to the pre-clinical disease models and patient cohorts to answer clinically-important questions, with ultimate goals to benefit the patients. The project and duties of the postdoc
The project is to investigate the atherosclerosis-relevant epigenomic regulatory mechanisms in human blood monocytes. The successful candidate will work closely with clinical doctors to 1) apply the established techniques (i.e. ChIP-seq, RNA-seq, ATAC-seq, 4C-seq, proteomics, etc); and 2) develop new advanced tools (HiC, micro-C, etc) to study the chromatin remodelling events in human monocytes between healthy and disease groups. He/she is also expected to perform combinative analysis to extract the clinical-relevant information from the multi-OMICs data.

Qualifications
The successful candidate should:

1) Be highly motivated and talented with a degree in molecular biology, biomedicine, medicine, biochemistry, genetics or related fields.

2) Have solid knowledge of molecular biology and extensive wet lab experience in state-of-the art molecular biology techniques applied to genomics, epigenomics and transcriptional regulation.

3) Have experience of working with human blood monocytes.

4) Already have or keen to learn bioinformatics analysis of genome-wide sequencing data, in addition to above wet lab skills.

Above that, we also expect the successful candidate to have excellent communication and organizational skills, and work both independently and as a team player.

Entry requirements
Scholarships for postdoctoral qualification can be established for foreign researchers who place their qualifications in Sweden. The purpose of scholarships for postdoctoral qualification is to promote internationalization and contribute to research qualification after a doctorate or equivalent.
A scholarship for carrying out postdoctoral research can be granted for a maximum of two years within a four year period following the receipt of a doctoral degree or equivalent.
To be eligible for a postdoctoral scholarship, the person must have obtained a doctorate or a foreign degree deemed to be equivalent to a doctorate. Applicants who have not completed a doctorate at the end of the application period may also apply, provided that all requirements for a completed degree are met before the (intended) start date of the post doctoral education.

The head of the department determines whether their previous training and scholarly qualifications correspond to a Swedish doctorate or higher.

Type of scholarship
The amount is tax free and it is set for twelve months at a time, paid out on a six months basis. In exceptional cases, shorter periods may be acceptable.
