Do you want to contribute to top quality medical research?

A Research Assistant position in Spatial Chromatin Biology is immediately available in the Bienko lab for Quantitative Genome Biology at the Science for Life Laboratory (SciLifeLab) in Stockholm.

As a Research Assistant, you will be involved in different projects ongoing in the lab aimed at understanding how the spatial arrangement of chromatin in the nucleus of mammalian cells contributes to regulate gene expression and ultimately shape cell identity.

You will work in a dynamic research environment focused on basic genome biology, molecular methods development and oncogenomics (https://bienkocrosettolabs.org/). You will work alongside senior scientists, postdocs and PhD students from many diverse fields and backgrounds, having the opportunity to learn new concepts in biology, developing your experimental skills, and fostering your creativity.

Your mission

We have recently developed a new method based on next-generation sequencing, GPSeq (Girelli et al., Nature Biotechnology 2020 in press), which, for the first time, allows studying how different types of chromatin are spatially distributed in the cell nucleus and how DNA in different parts of the nucleus is differentially prone to mutate.

Your primary task will be supporting other experimentalists in the lab, by culturing cells, preparing samples for GPSeq, preparing GPSeq libraries and sequencing them on our NextSeq500 machine.

You will also be trained in our microscopy technique, iFISH, for high-resolution DNA and RNA fluorescence hybridization (FISH) (Gelali et al., Nature Communications 2019).

Your profile

Are you meticulous, attentive to detail, well-organized, flexible, patient and self-critical? Are you problem solving-oriented? Do you like helping others, working in a team and have your job well done? Do you like to have your initiative while solving complex problems? Then you are the right person!

You are not expected to know how to design and conduct complex experiments (although you are expected to know how to use a pipette and prepare a buffer), but you are definitely expected to be willing to learn top-quality laboratory work from people with years of experience, and to be constantly willing to improve your skills and performance as an experimentalist.

If you have previously worked with NGS techniques, that’s great! However, we also welcome applications from people without prior experience in NGS who have previously worked with general molecular biology techniques.

In order to be eligible for this position, you must hold a Master’s degree in Biology, Bioengineering, Biomedicine, Medicine or equivalent.
