One postdoctoral position is available in the Research Group of Protein Degradation Pathways at the Department of Physiology and Pharmacology, Biomedicum, Karolinska Institutet.

Division

The research group of Helin Norberg focuses on Autophagy (in particular Chaperone-Mediated Autophagy (CMA)). Previous studies from the group uncovered that CMA can selectively be directed to target oncoproteins (proteins involved in the onset or development of cancers) (Hao et al., Autophagy, 2019; Xia et al., JCB 2015). Currently, the group is interested in investigating the CMA pathway in depths both at cellular and organismal level, in order to explore the role of activating CMA in various human disorders, including cancer, cardiomyopathies. The study will involve integrative approaches consisting of cell biology, tanscriptomics, bioinformatics, genetic, biochemical and molecular biological tools using human cells, clinical samples as well as mice tissues. The research group (1-2 students and postdoctoral fellows) collaborate with preclinical as well as clinical researchers not only within Karolinska Institutet, but also with other Swedish and international researchers.

Duties

The successful applicant will carry out in vitro work utilizing cell cultures and imaging as well studies and tissue analysis utilizing disease-related tissue of human and mice models. Both conventional and explorative drugs will be part of the studies. The candidate will be expected to work independently or in a team, as the duties will provide opportunities to teach and supervise master and PhD student. The successful candidate must have strong organizational skills. The candidate is expected to take part in all aspects of experimental planning and analysis of data generated, as well as preparation and presentation and publications.

Your Profile

The applicant must be driven, ambitious and demonstrate a strong interest with a previous experience in cell and molecular biology as well as biochemistry in Autophagy research field. To qualify, the candidate must have expertise in human cell culture, primary cell cultures, biochemical and cell biology methodology. The candidate´s personal skills will be highly valued and emphasis will be placed on personal skills, knowledge and abilities, as well as on documented previous work. The ideal candidate should have published first author publications from previous work and candidates that possess previous work and publications on autophagy, chaperone-mediated autophagy, will be prioritized.

A great ability to express themselves in speech and writing, including scientific writing in advanced level of English are required.

Entry requirements

Scholarships for postdoctoral qualification can be established for foreign researchers who place their qualifications in Sweden. The purpose of scholarships for postdoctoral qualification is to promote internationalization and contribute to research qualification after a doctorate or equivalent.

A scholarship for carrying out postdoctoral research can be granted for a maximum of two years within a four year period following the receipt of a doctoral degree or equivalent.

To be eligible for a postdoctoral scholarship, the person must have obtained a doctorate or a foreign degree deemed to be equivalent to a doctorate. Applicants who have not completed a doctorate at the end of the application period may also apply, provided that all requirements for a completed degree are met before the (intended) start date of the post doctoral education. This must be substantiated by the applicant's main supervisor, director or equivalent.

The head of the department determines whether their previous training and scholarly qualifications correspond to a Swedish doctorate or higher.

Location: Biomedicum, Solna.

Type of scholarship

The amount is tax free and it is set for twelve months at a time, paid out on a six months basis. In exceptional cases, shorter periods may be acceptable.

Application process

An application must contain the following documents in English or Swedish:

  • A complete curriculum vitae, including date of the thesis defence, title of the thesis, previous academic positions, academic title, current position, academic distinctions, and committee work
  • A complete list of publications
  • A summary of current work (no more than one page)

The application is to be submitted on the Varbi recruitment system.
