To be a doctoral student means to devote oneself to a research project under supervision of experienced researchers and following an individual study plan. For a doctoral degree, the equivalent of four years of full-time doctoral education is required.

The research group
The laboratory of Hanna Brauner is located in an excellent immunological research environment at the Centre for Molecular Medicine, CMM. The close proximity of the laboratory to the clinic at the Karolinska University Hospital also facilitates collaborations with clinicians of different fields. The Hanna Brauner laboratory is associated to the Marie Wahren-Herlenius group and part of a newly created constellation focused on inflammatory research at CMM.

The doctoral student project and the duties of the doctoral student
We seek a highly motivated PhD student to join the Hanna Brauner team in focusing on finding novel pathogenic mechanisms and prognostic markers for patients with cutaneous lymphoma. This project aims to generate knowledge for increasing survival and health of cutaneous lymphoma patients, by combining epidemiologic and experimental studies.

Most of the patients with cutaneous lymphoma get indolent disease but for largely unknown reasons around 10-15 % develop aggressive disease with high fatality. The fact that the disease affects the skin makes this subtype of lymphoma uniquely accessible, enabling studies of the clinical course of the disease over time. In these efforts, our ultimate aims are to increase fundamental knowledge on cutaneous lymphoma pathogenesis, aid earlier identification of patients at risk of aggressive disease and assess of the effects of different treatments.  

We have access to unique clinical material, which we will assess in a truly translational approach, applying innovative methods to understand key clinical questions. In addition, we will perform the first national study on cutaneous lymphoma based on the national lymphoma registry, to investigate prognostic factors and the effects of treatments.

The position thus includes both epidemiological work and experimental work, primarily with clinical material and cell lines but possibly also animal experiments. Key experimental techniques include in vitro assessments of immune cell phenotype and function, advanced flow cytometry, immunohistochemistry, single cell RNA sequencing and confocal microscopy.

A) General eligibility requirement
You meet the general eligibility requirement for doctoral/third-cycle/PhD education if you:

1. have been awarded a second-cycle/advanced/master qualification (i.e. master degree) or
2. have satisfied the requirements for courses comprising at least 240 credits of which at least 60 credits were awarded in the advanced/second-cycle/master level, or
3. have acquired substantially equivalent knowledge in some other way in Sweden or abroad.*

B) Specific eligibility requirement

You meet the specific eligibility requirement for doctoral/third-cycle/PhD education if you:

Skills and personal qualities
The successful applicant meets the general and specific eligibility requirements listed above, and further has strong interpersonal skills, motivation and organizational and executive capacity. The applicant must be able to work in team and be willing to collaborate and help others. Previous experience of experimental work within relevant fields and/or work with registry data is a merit but not necessary.

Terms and conditions
The doctoral student will be employed on a doctoral studentship maximum 4 years full-time.

Location
The position is located within the Department of Medicine, Solna. The department consists of twelve divisions and each division consists of several research groups. The position is located within the research group of Hanna Brauner, that currently consists of two full time postdoctoral students, two part time clinical postdoctoral students, one associated student and three associated medical doctors.
