Do you want to contribute to top quality medical research?

Department of Microbiology, Tumor and Cell Biology (MTC) at Karolinska Institutet conducts research and teaching in immunology, infection biology, cell biology and cancer. MTC has about 430 active employees, including 100 PhD students, 50 postdoctoral researchers and 26 professors. Key words are multidisciplinary, bridging, translational, national and international collaborations.

A doctoral position is an available doctoral education project to which a PhD student is to be recruited. After selection the process for admission to doctoral education will commence. An admission decision will not be taken until an individual study plan has been approved by the departmental admission board.

For more information regarding doctoral (PhD) education, see: http://www.ki.se/doctoral.

The research group
The Department of Microbiology, Tumor and Cell Biology at Karolinska Institutet (KI) announces an opportunity to join the research group of Assistant Professor Georgios A. Sotiriou as a PhD student in the topic: nanoparticles as drug carriers and imaging agents. The lab has extensive experience in the flame synthesis of nanoparticles and assembly of devices with focus on superior performance. The lab’s mission is to develop nanobiomaterials, tools and methods for medicine using engineering sciences. The research in this lab is highly multidisciplinary combining expertise from material engineering, bioengineering and health sciences. This allows for the design of bionanomaterials that exhibit the desired functionality in applications ranging from diagnostics (biosensors) to therapeutic interventions. We place specific emphasis in the fight against infections and antimicrobial resistance using innovative solutions with functional nanoscale materials.

For more information about the research see the KI webpage of the Principal Investigator (PI), Assistant Professor Dr. Georgios A. Sotiriou http://ki.se/en/people/geosot and the research group’s website: https://sotirioulab.org

For any questions please contact the PI at georgios.sotiriou@ki.se

The doctoral student project and the duties of the doctoral student
The PhD studies correspond to 4 years of full-time studies. This includes lab work, courses, seminars, and presentation of results at meetings. Other responsibilities include development of methodology and work routines, literature review, statistical analysis, drafting scientific manuscripts and adhering to the lab manual routines.

The specific target of this project is to develop the next generation of flame-made nanoparticles as drug nanocarriers and imaging agents for applications in nano-vaccines. Specifically, the student will produce a variety of nanoparticles by flame aerosol technology and work in close collaboration with colleagues to functionalize the developed nanoparticles with specific biomolecules to offer effective protection against bacterial pathogens. A further aim of the project is to utilize flame-made nanoparticles as in vivo bioimaging agents.

Eligibility requirements for doctoral education
