Division

A scholarship-funded postdoctoral position is available at the laboratory of Skeletal Physiology (Department of Physiology and Pharmacology, Karolinska Institute) headed by Associate Professor Andrei S Chagin. We are working on different aspects of cartilage and bone biology from evolutionary and developmental biology to physiology and regenerative medicine. Currently, we are substantially focused on epiphyseal cartilage where we have recently revealed a novel stem cell niche (Newton PT et al., Nature 2019, 567:234-238), but also exploring skeletal stem cells, evolution and development of the skeletal elements, the role of mTOR, autophagy and nutrition in those processes. Translationally, our research is related to children longitudinal growth, osteoporosis, osteoarthritis and fracture healing.

Karolinska Institute is one of the world’s leading medical universities and is well renowned for its Nobel Assembly, which selects the Nobel laureates in Physiology or Medicine. Our laboratory is located at Biomedicum, a recently-build scientific heart of Karolinska Institute. We have an easy access to all top-notch research facilities, including brand-new animal house, advanced microscopy (confocal, two-photon), single cells sequencing facility and many more. Inspiring scientific environment, extensive network of local and international collaborations and access to the state-of-the-art facilities allow us to perform research projects at the highest scientific standard.

Duties

The postdoctoral fellow is expected to drive scientific projects, to learn the methods in the lab as well as independently establish new techniques and technology, to coordinate ongoing collaborations both within and outside the team and to instruct students and other scientists in the team. He or she should be able to plan, perform, analyze and document experiments and to communicate the results both within the department and to the greater research community. The duties furthermore include actively taking part in research meetings, handling mouse colonies and tissue biopsies and contributing to the smooth running of the local research environment

Entry requirements

We are looking for a highly motivated, enthusiastic and efficient researcher with a PhD in a relevant discipline and experience in genetic, molecular and cellular biology methods.

Scholarships for postdoctoral qualification can be established for foreign researchers who place their qualifications in Sweden. The purpose of scholarships for postdoctoral qualification is to promote internationalization and contribute to research qualification after a doctorate or equivalent.

A scholarship for carrying out postdoctoral research can be granted for a maximum of two years within a four year period following the receipt of a doctoral degree or equivalent.

To be eligible for a postdoctoral scholarship, the person must have obtained a doctorate or a foreign degree deemed to be equivalent to a doctorate. Applicants who have not completed a doctorate at the end of the application period may also apply, provided that all requirements for a completed degree are met before the (intended) start date of the post doctoral education.

The head of the department determines whether their previous training and scholarly qualifications correspond to a Swedish doctorate or higher.

Language: English and Swedish are two official languages at Karolinska Institute. Working language in the lab is English. More than 90% of Swedish population is fluent in English. This creates comfortable living conditions within and outside the institution.

Type of scholarship

The amount is tax free and it is set for twelve months at a time, paid out on a six months basis. In exceptional cases, shorter periods may be acceptable.
