The Department of Microbiology, Tumor and Cell Biology (MTC) at Karolinska Institutet conducts research and teaching in immunology, infection biology, cell biology and cancer. MTC has about 430 active employees, including 100 PhD students, 50 postdoctoral researchers and 26 professors.

We are seeking a virologist at the post-doctoral level to work on the team of Assistant Professor Benjamin Murrell at MTC, Stockholm. Dr Murrell studies various aspects of computational biology, virology, and immunology, focusing on evolution and sequence analysis. For a list of publications, see here: https://scholar.google.com/citations?hl=en&user=I80vy5cAAAAJ

Dr Murrell’s research addresses methodological problems in computational biology, including thoserelated to:

  • Long-read next generation sequence analysis.
  • Molecular evolution and phylogenetics.
  • Understanding the co-evolution of neutralizing antibodies and HIV.
  • Various topics in biological data analysis.

Duties
The project aims to leverage PacBio sequencing of HIV to inform vaccine design at a variety of levels. The successful applicant will be involved in both wetlab and computational projects, including experimental design, PacBio sequencing, data processing and analysis, and assaying antibody neutralization of HIV.  Duties will extend to developing new methods and tools for advanced analysis, and supporting the ongoing research in the group, including integrating biological insights into computational projects.

Entry requirements

Applicants should have:

1) A PhD degree (awarded or about to be awarded) in Virology, or a very closely related specialization.

2) Strong English proficiency, and good oral and written communication skills.

3) Hands-on experience with PacBio sequencing and assay design.

4) Experience with the following laboratory techniques is preferred: viral RNA extraction from blood plasma or tissue, PCR, molecular cloning, site-directed mutagenesis, mammalian cell culture, and inhibition/neutralization assays.

5) Some degree of programming experience is required, and knowledge of Julia syntax is strongly preferred.

6) An excellent research track record, including co-authored publications that are well-cited in their field. Applicants should have experience as lead author of a paper in a high impact journal and previously published work related to the development of broadly neutralizing antibodies to HIV.

Application process
An employment application must contain the following documents in English:

  1. A complete curriculum vitae, including title of PhD thesis, previousacademic positions, academic title, current position, academic distinctions, and committee work
  1. A complete list of publications

The application is to be submitted through the Varbi recruitment system.
