The Department of Neurobiology, Care Sciences and Society (NVS) conducts world leading research in aging, dementia, epidemiology and care sciences. This research extends from basic molecular and cell levels to clinical research and societal studies. NVS educates almost a third of KI students at basic and advanced levels. The Department has approximately 450 employees and a revenue 2018 of 490 million SEK. It comprises seven divisions, located at Campus Flemingsberg and Campus Solna.

Department
The position is situated at the physiotherapy section which currently has about 40 teachers/researchers/co-workers, three administrators and nearly 20 doctoral students and a large international contact network. The section conducts education, research and postgraduate education in physiotherapy. The research and postgraduate education are national and international leaders in the field of physiotherapy.
This position is situated within a collaborative research project between the Division of Physiotherapy at Karolinska Institutet (KI) and University of the Western Cape, Cape Town. This project seeks to learn about health care systems by assessing the nature of key acute and rehabilitation processes, as well as outcomes, in order to strengthening management guidelines for stroke and traumatic spinal cord injury care in South Africa and Sweden. This position is within in a sub-study of this project focusing on method development of objective assessment of function and physical activity using accelerometers in people with stroke. The project group includes bachelor, masters and doctoral students. The project leader at Karolinska Institutet is David Conradsson and this position will be based at the Division of Physiotherapy KI.
We now want to expand the group with a research assistant, the position is for three months from October, 80%.
The applicant is expected to work at Karolinska Institutet, campus Flemingsberg.

Duties
As a research assistant at the physiotherapy section, you will perform data management and statistical analyses within ongoing projects regarding physical activity and function accelerometer data. 

The tasks performed independently include:

  • Data entry and structuring of data in databases
  • Perform data collection, processing, data analysis and statistical analysis
  • Compile written scientific reports and oral presentations

 

Entry requirements
With regards to the focus of this project on digital signal processing of physical activity data, the applicant must have a Master’s degree in a relevant field, e.g. Applied Physics, Applied Mathematics, Data Analytics, Engineering. Knowledge of digital signal processing (DSP), databases and ability to produce graphical representations and data visualisation is an advantage. Previous experience and knowledge of analysis of physical activity data using Matlab or Python for automatic data processing is highly meritorious.
The candidate must be fluent in English, and have advanced writing skills. The candidate is expected to be familiar with using Microsoft office (e.g. Excel, PowerPoint) and a relevant statistical package for data analysis.
The candidate must have good presentation skills (Good ability to communicate results). The applicant will be part of a dynamic international project group, and he/she should be driven, motivated, take initiative, and have good communication and problem-solving skills. The applicant must also be able to work independently and as part of the team. Previous experience of working in a trans-disciplinary research team is a merit.
