Karolinska Institutet,

The Department of Laboratory Medicine consists of seven divisions and is active in many areas of Laboratory Medicine. The department is involved in advanced basic scientific, clinical and epidemiological research. The department is one of the largest departments of education at Karolinska Institutet.

Research group
The Neogi group work towards unraveling the mechanism of immune-aging in people living with HIV (PLHIV) on successful therapy and understanding the mechanisms of natural immune control in HIV-1 infection using multi-omics system biology approach amalgamating with in vitro and ex vivo experimental assays. Our group aims to understand the genetic, cellular, and molecular mechanisms of immune aging in PLHIV on successful long-term treatment. We are applying high-throughput multi-omics technologies (e.g., epigenomics, transcriptomics, proteomics, and metabolomics), along with in vitro and ex vivo experimental methods that help bridge the gap between genotype and phenotype and to understand how it regulates immune-aging and age-related diseases in PLHIV. Our studies can, therefore, provide possibilities to therapeutically target the immune-aging process through metabolic interference, thus allowing more individualized care. The research group has both bioinformatics team as well as an experimental team with four doctoral students, three bioinformaticians, two postdocs, and one assistant professor.

Duties
The present PostDoc position aim towards understanding the intercellular pathway of immune-aging and natural control in HIV-infection. The candidate should have a strong background in immune-metabolism more specific to nucleotide synthesis, mitochondrial DNA depletion, and cellular metabolic pathways.

The candidate is expected to work with infectious patient material and perform basic molecular biological techniques like qPCR, molecular cloning and gene manipulation, expression along with basic cell culture techniques including FACS. The candidate should also have a very strong experience with generation of transgenic mouse models, and  harvesting tissues from mice;

The researchers involved in this study have extensive experience in system biology, molecular biology, clinical virology, clinical science and immunology. Therefore the candidate should be curious, enthusiastic, initiative, with a strong work ethic, excellent writing skills, and the ability to drive a project forward.

Entry requirements
A person is eligible for a position as a Postdoctoral Researcher if he or she has obtained a Ph.D. no more than five years before the last date of employment as postdoc.

We seek a highly motivated candidate with a demonstrated record of scientific excellence. The applicant must hold a PhD in Biomedical Sciences or equivalent.

The candidate should also have

  • Good understanding of molecular biology, genetics, gene manipulation, plasmid construction, and manipulation, and real-time PCR.
  • Experience in handling infectious material including viruses (biosafety level 2 and 3), use of the multi-colour flow cytometry, cell-sorting and light microscopy would all be valuable attributes.
  • Maintenance of primary and immortal cell lines, cell viability and proliferation assays, gene specific siRNA knockdown and cellular uptake and release assays
  • Demonstration of scientific expertise and excellence by means of authorship (ideally first author) in peer-reviewed publications in internationally recognized scientific journals.

We welcome a creative, hardworking and enthusiastic team-player to our group. The candidate is expected to take part in experimental design, experimentation, presentations, and preparation of publications. The candidate should be proficient in English, both spoken and written. The successful candidates will be expected to actively seek funding with the assistance of the PI.

Application process
An employment application must contain the following documents in English or Swedish:

  1. A complete curriculum vitae, including date of the thesis defence, title of the thesis, previous academic positions, academic title, current position, academic distinctions, and committee work
  2. A complete list of publications
  3. A summary of current work (no more than one page)

The application is to be submitted through the Varbi recruitment system.
