Karolinska Institutet, Dept of Medicine/Center for Infectious Medicine, CIM

The department of Medicine at Huddinge comprises of seven units, three research centres, and a total of around 70 independent research groups. Our ambition is to be a leading department within medical research and education. At the Center for Infectious Medicine (http://www.ki.se/cim) research focuses on studies of the human immune system with special focus on infection immunology and autoimmune disease. The vision is to be a world leading translational research centre within immunology.

Description of the research group
Malin Flodström-Tullberg's group (http://ki.se/en/medh/malin-flodstrom-tullberg-group) at the Center for Infectious Medicine (CIM) focuses on studies of the etiology and pathogenesis of type 1 diabetes (T1D). The Flodström-Tullberg laboratory employs experimental in vitro and in vivo models and uses advanced molecular, proteomic, cellular and immunological techniques to study interactions between the insulin-producing beta cell, the host immune system, and viruses relevant to the etiology and pathogenesis of T1D. The group also participates in collaborative efforts aimed at developing and testing new immunomodulatory treatments for the prevention of T1D.

Project and duties
We are looking for a talented postdoc who wants to participate in efforts to unravel how genetic and environmental factors regulate the risk of beta cell destruction and T1D development. We offer an outstanding opportunity to work in a stimulating and innovative research environment. The research includes, but is not limited to, studies of experimental disease models and the use of bioinformatics methods to analyze transcriptomic and proteomic data obtained via RNAseq and mass spectrometry. The successful candidate is expected to participate in the scientific design and establishment of experimental protocols, work with experimental in vivo models, generate data, develop and apply bioinformatic tools to analyze data, present and interpret results, write scientific reports and articles in English. The tasks may also include project administration and training of masters and/or Ph.D. students.

Qualifications
The successful applicant must have a Ph.D. degree in biology, medicine, biomedicine or another relevant field, previous experience in cell- and molecular wet-lab experimental methods, documented knowledge in statistical methods and some previous experience in large-scale data analysis. Having experience from translational research in the areas of microbiome, inflammation, allergy or autoimmune disease is strong a merit. The applicant must also have excellent communication and team work skills, and be fluent in the English language.

Entry requirements
Scholarships for postdoctoral qualification can be established for foreign researchers who place their qualifications in Sweden. The purpose of scholarships for postdoctoral qualification is to promote internationalization and contribute to research qualification after a doctorate or equivalent. A scholarship for carrying out postdoctoral research can be granted for a maximum of two years within a four-year period following the receipt of a doctoral degree or equivalent.

The candidate must hold a PhD equivalent to a Swedish doctoral degree. The head of the department determines whether their previous training and scholarly qualifications correspond to a Swedish doctorate or higher.

Type of scholarship
The amount is tax free and it is set for twelve months at a time, paid out on a six months basis. In exceptional cases, shorter periods may be acceptable. The scholarship period is initially one year with a possibility for a one year extenstion.

Application process
An application must contain the following documents in English or Swedish:

  • A complete curriculum vitae, including date of the thesis defence, title of the thesis, previous academic positions, academic title, current position, academic distinctions, and committee work
  • A complete list of publications
  • A summary of current work (no more than one page)

The application is to be submitted on the Varbi recruitment system.
