Karolinska Institutet

The Department of Laboratory Medicine consists of seven divisions and is active in many areas of Laboratory Medicine. The department is involved in advanced basic scientific, clinical and epidemiological research. The department is one of the largest departments of education at Karolinska Institutet.

The Department of Laboratory Medicine consists of six departments within which both research and teaching are conducted. The department is involved in advanced research within both basic research and applied research. All departments operate in close contact with clinics at Karolinska University Hospital. The institution's educational activities contribute to most programs and courses within KI's total educational offering.

The Pre-GMP core facility at ANA Futura
The Pre-GMP facility was created within a Centre for Advanced Medical Products (CAMP) project to support researchers and biotech industries to successfully overcome road blocks in the process of developing Advanced Therapy Medicinal Products (ATMPs). The Pre-GMP facility works in close collaboration with the GMP facility Vecura present at the Karolinska University Hospital. The two facilities are harmonized to provide a smooth transition of ATMPs projects from process development to GMP production.

The goals of the Pre-GMP facility are to provide the technical support and resources to researchers with specific focus on:

  • Make research projects ready for transition to GMP production
  • Develop and validate SOPs
  • Test new equipment
  • Train and educate staff and students

Duties/Specific tasks
Within the pre-GMP facility the successful applicant will have the opportunity to work in a variety of projects related to ATMPs, some examples will be production of HQ plasmids, production of viral vectors, production and carachterization of extracellular vesicles as biological carriers, genetic modification and expansion of CAR- and TCR-T cells and NK cells.

In particular the successful candidate will be required to:

  • Develop and validate specific SOPs in collaboration with the PI for each specific project
  • Provide technical support and training on specific equipment to the facility users
  • Contribute to the facility management by maintaining a good record of the usage of the instruments and consumables

Qualifications
The applicant must hold a Ph.D. degree in the field of medical science, biomedicine, immunology, or biology. The ideal candidate for this position is independent, practical, organized and detailed oriented.

Candidates should be highly-motivated, creative, have strong communication skills as well as an excellent track record and extensive knowledge in process development and validation for cell therapy, gene therapy and other ATMPs.

Documented experience and independent work in the field of extracellular vesicles including cellular immunology, development of engineered extracellular vesicles, Nanoparticle Tracking Analysis (NTA), Tangential Flow Filtration (TFF), cell culture, genetic modification of lymphocytes by viral and non-viral vectors, advanced knowledge of molecular biology and NK cells biology is all required.

Documented GMP training is mandatory.

The candidate must be skilled in using standard information technologies for biomedical research purposes. Fluency in English and skills in scientific writing are mandatory. High level oral and written presentation skills are critical for these positions.

We are looking for a researcher who has a strong work ethic, high integrity and be aware of the multicultural setting they are going to be located at. Personal suitability will be a strong selection criterion.

  • Summary of doctoral thesis with appropriate references to published research outputs (max. 3 pages including references and figures, 12 p font size, 1.5 line space). Please also include your exact input for each study in the thesis with regards to designing and carrying out experiments, optimizing techniques and writing manuscripts.
  • A complete list of publications in peer-reviewed journals and abstracts presented at international meetings.
  • A synopsis of current work if different from doctoral thesis (max. 1 page including references and figures, 12 p font size, 1.5 line space).
  • A synopsis of scientific problems or questions the applicant believes are paramount to the field of ATMPs and how to experimentally approach these projects (max. 1 page including references and figures, 12 p font size, 1.5 line space). A set of character references that will serve as confirmation of good character.
