Karolinska Institutet, NVS

The Department of Neurobiology, Care Sciences and Society (NVS) conducts world leading research in aging, dementia, epidemiology and care sciences. This research extends from basic molecular and cell levels to clinical research and societal studies. NVS educates almost a third of KI students at basic and advanced levels. The Department has approximately 540 employees and a revenue 2023 of 530 million SEK. It comprises seven divisions, located at Campus Flemingsberg and Campus Solna.

Division and project
Karolinska Institutet Center for Alzheimer Research and the Division of Neurogeriatrics perform research on different aspects of Alzheimer disease and other neurodegenerative disorders from molecules to patients.
The project aims to set up and use zebrafish as a model to study the vascular component of neurodegenerative diseases including Alzheimer and small vessel disease. The project involves several groups with extensive expertise in developing animal models for neurodegenerative diseases which are being used to unravel disease mechanisms. The research project will be located at Bioclinium at the KI-Campus-Nord, Solna.

Duties
The candidate is expected to have a strong drive to pursue experimental research, and an ambitious and innovative attitude. The projects are pursued in collaboration with several research groups, and good collaborative skills are necessary. Good ability to speak and write English is also a requirement.
The position involves the establishment of zebrafish as a complementary model system to study neurodegenerative disease and its links to vascular biology and dysregulation of the vascular system. Specifically, the function of genes of interest will be assessed in zebrafish models, which is a rapid and cost-efficient system to explore gene function. It has recently been observed that Alzheimer disease and other neurodegenerative diseases are associated not only with neuronal but also with vascular problems, but the cellular and molecular basis for this is poorly understood. The goal is therefore to explore how dysregulation of the nervous system affects the vascular system and vice versa, which may include investigation of the role of autophagy in protein aggregation and toxicity. Supervision of PhD students as principal supervisor is a merit.

Entry requirements
A person is eligible to be appointed Researcher if he or she has been awarded a Degree of Doctor or has achieved the corresponding scientific competence, as well as documented research after publicly defending his or her doctoral thesis corresponding to qualification as Assistant professor.
A PhD in (bio) medicine, cell biology, biotechnology or similar topic is required. Extensive and documented experience with zebra fish as a model system is qualifying, including scientific publications in this research area. The successful applicant should master technologies in zebrafish research, including morpholino (conditional knockdown) and gene knockout technologies; overexpression of genes; microscopy analysis, in situ hybridization; behavior and locomotion analysis; analysis of phenotypes at the morphological level; ex vivo cell culturing of zebrafish cells.
As this will be a new research trajectory at the Division of Neurogeriatrics, experience with building up and running a zebrafish unit is a merit.

Bases of assessment
We stress research expertise when assessing applicants.

Application process
An application must contain the following documents in English: Curriculum vitae, qualifications and description of planned research, presented in accordance with Karolinska Institutet’s qualifications portfolio (http://ki.se/qualificationsportfolio).

The application is to be submitted through the Varbi recruitment system.

At Karolinska Institutet a 6-month trial period is required for all permanent appointments.
