Karolinska Institutet, Department of Microbiology, Tumor and Cell Biology

Department of Microbiology, Tumor and Cell Biology (MTC) at Karolinska Institutet conducts research and teaching in immunology, infection biology, cell biology and cancer. MTC has about 430 active employees, including 80 PhD students, 77 postdoctoral researchers and 32 professors. Key words are multidisciplinary, bridging, translational, national and international collaborations.

Division
We are seeking a highly motivated and talented person for dissecting the molecular and cellular mechanisms regulating neural tumor development. The postdoctoral scholarship position is placed in Dr. Margareta Wilhelm’s Laboratory situated in the new Biomedicum building at Karolinska Institutet, in a strong medical research environment with extensive possibilities for interaction and support. More details about the group can be found at Margareta Wilhelm group

Duties
Childhood neural tumors are thought to arise from stem or progenitor cells during development. We have generated iPS cells and neural stem cells through reprogramming of non-cancerous skin cells from patients with cancer-driving germline mutations. The project will involve advanced cell culturing techniques and in vivo modeling to identify at which developmental stage, from stem cell to differentiated cells, driver mutations are activated and induce cellular transformation and tumor development. Our approach enables us to recapitulate all stages of tumor development, from initiation to late stages, thus providing novel models for studying cancer processes in relevant human cells (for an overview of the concept of using reprogramming to develop novel cancer models see review Marin Navarro et al. Cell Death Discovery, 2018, 4:7)

Qualifications of the applicant
Candidates should have a strong background in stem cell biology or neural tumor development and demonstrate a promising publication record with at least one first-author peer-reviewed publication. Proficiency in stem cell culture techniques is a requirement. Skills in mouse cancer models and bioinformatics are an advantage. The candidate should be self-motivated, have good communication skills and ability to interact effectively and work productively in a team. Emphasis will be placed on personal suitability.

Entry requirements
Scholarships for postdoctoral qualification can be established for foreign researchers who place their qualifications in Sweden. The purpose of scholarships for postdoctoral qualification is to promote internationalization and contribute to research qualification after a doctorate or equivalent.

A scholarship for carrying out postdoctoral research can be granted for a maximum of two years within a four year period following the receipt of a doctoral degree or equivalent.

To be eligible for a postdoctoral scholarship, the person must have obtained a doctorate or a foreign degree deemed to be equivalent to a doctorate. The head of the department determines whether their previous training and scholarly qualifications correspond to a Swedish doctorate or higher.

Type of scholarship
A scholarship for carrying out postdoctoral research can be granted for a maximum of two years within a four year period following the receipt of a doctoral degree or equivalent.

The amount is tax free and it is set for twelve months at a time, paid out on a six months basis. In exceptional cases, shorter periods may be acceptable.

Application process
An employment application must contain the following documents in English or Swedish:

  • A complete curriculum vitae, including date of the thesis defence, title of the thesis, previous academic positions, academic title, current position, academic distinctions, and committee work
  • A complete list of publications
  • A summary of current work (no more than one page)

The application is to be submitted on the Varbi recruitment system. Deadline for the application is January 31, 2019, but interesting candidates can be called for interviews before this deadline so applying before the deadline is encouraged.
