Karolinska Institutet,

The Department of Laboratory Medicine consists of seven divisions and is active in many areas of Laboratory Medicine. The department is involved in advanced basic scientific, clinical and epidemiological research. The department is one of the largest departments of education at Karolinska Institutet.

A research position is available at the at the Division of Clinical Physiology

Research Division
The position is available at the Division of Clinical Physiology, Department of Laboratory Medicine in Huddinge, in the protein degradation research led by Dr. Mikael Altun. Our research dividion of clinical physiology aims to increase awareness of the link between physical activity and health, and the causes of impaired body function such as muscle wasting during disease or aging. Our research is conducted in close collaboration with the Physiology Department at the Karolinska University Hospital. Traditional metabolic and physiological measurements are combined with molecular analysis (gene and protein expression, by single and global techniques, and integrated bioinformatics) in different tissues as well as in primary cell cultures, combining state-of-art chemical biology and molecular biology tools.

The research project
The project is a collaboration project between Dr. Altun, the DDD platform at SciLifelab, CBCS platform at SciLifelab and SGC-Stockholm towards the development of technologies and tools around novel PROTACs. The aim of the project is to create a foundation for PROTAC molecule development that could be set up later within the national infrastructures for Swedish academics to discover novel therapeutics for disease.

Entry requirements
Qualified to be employed as a postdoctor is one who has obtained a doctorate or has equivalent scientific competence. The persons appointed should primarily be the ones who have been granted a Degree of Doctor or have reached the corresponding competence no more than a year before the end of the application period. Qualifying to be employed as post-doctoral student according to the collective agreement (PKA) is the one who holds a doctoral degree within the past three years.

Other requirements
The candidate should have a great understanding of chemical and molecular biology and be highly motivated and passionate towards his/her projects. Experience in technology development, understanding of the ubiquitin proteasome system, and protein stability assays is required. In addition, competence in handling and propagation of lentiviruses, as well as high-content imaging acquisition and analysis is preferred. The candidate must possess a robust track record of publications in translational and chemical biology with specific focus on small molecule development and cellular evaluation. Demonstrated ability to secure research funding in these fields is favored, although not required. The candidate should have worked in multiple research environments nationally and internationally and demonstrate the ability to effectively collaborate with external research groups. As such, an excellent level of English proficiency, both spoken and written, is also required.

Bases of assessment
We stress scientific expertise when assessing applicants.
