Research group
The PhD project will take advantage of the resources of Igor Adameyko group at Karolinska Institutet, Department of Physiology and Pharmacology that is positioned in a new Biomedicum, including state-of-the-art mouse transgenic and imaging facilities. This will be complemented by use of national infrastructures provided by SciLifeLab for Single Cell Transcriptomics with the opportunity to perform a variety of protocols including 10X Genomics platform, other droplet methods, Smartseq2. Imaging facilities include confocal, tumor visualization methods and super-resolution instrumentation. Importantly, this project will foster a close collaboration with the hospital site. Thus, we have the ability to work close with clinician and are able to retrieve large number of rare tumor material. The biobank at the Karolinska hospital has one of the largest PCC/PGL collections in Europe. The work environment in the Adameyko group is friendly and open, with a number of internal and external collaborations that will expand a personal network of a future PhD student. 

The doctoral education project and the duties of the student
The doctoral project will entail neural crest research at the single cell level and will require duties in performing functional gene expression studies including in chick neural crest model system. The PhD student will also aim to produce a “single cell” atlas of neural crest, carotid organ, sympathoblasts and adrenal medulla through serial mouse and human developmental stages and in adulthood to build the molecular trajectory explaining fate transitions.

Entry requirements for doctoral education at KI
In order to participate in the selection for a doctoral position at Karolinska Institutet, the following requirements have to be met:

General entry requirements

A person meets the general entry requirements for doctoral/third-cycle/PhD education (according to

Higher Education Ordinance Chapt 7, section 39) if he/she:

  1. has been awarded advanced/second-cycle/master qualification (i.e. master degree) or
  2. has satisfied the requirements for courses comprising at least 240 credits of which at least 60 credits were awarded in the second-cycle/master level, or
  3. has acquired substantially equivalent konwledge in some other way in Sweden or abroad.

Specific entry requirements
Proficiency in English equivalent to the course English B/English 6 at Swedish upper secondary school is an entry requirement for doctoral education at KI. Applicants who meet the general entry requirements (1 or 2 above) from a university in one of the Nordic countries has met the requirements in English.

Skills and personal qualities
There is a set of knowledge and technical skills that is desired from a candidate for this position.

* Documented experience in developmental biology research

* Experience in working with mouse and chick embryonic model systems

* Good theoretical knowledge of neurulation and neural crest biology

Selection
A selection will be made among eligible applicants on the basis of the ability to benefit from doctoral education. The qualifications of the applicants will be evaluated on an overall basis.

KI uses the following bases of assessment:

- Documented subject knowledge of relevance to the area of research

- Analytical skill

- Other documented knowledge or experience that may be relevant to doctoral studies in the subject.
