The Department of Medicine, Solna, is one of the largest departments at Karolinska Institutet. The department consists of several divisions that are separated into different research groups. The core activities of the department are research, doctoral education and undergraduate education for medical and biomedical students. The research has three main profiles: allergy, cardiovascular medicine and inflammatory diseases.
Division
At the clinical epidemiology unit (KEP), we combine clinical, epidemiological, and biostatistical expertise with the aim to improve the understanding and treatment of a broad range of medical conditions. Situated at Eugeniahemmet at the Karolinska University Hospital campus in Solna, the research at KEP is focused on translational epidemiological studies in which register-data are often combined with information from questionnaires, hospital charts, and biosample-derived data to improve prediction of disease, treatment effects, and disease outcomes.
Within KEP, there are (at present) five research groups, of which one is within reproductive epidemiology. KEP also host the Centre for Pharmacoepidemiology and the Research School in Epidemiology for Clinicians , a collaboration between Karolinska Institutet and Stockholm County Council.
Duties
Reproductive epidemiology focus on factors during pregnancy and delivery influencing maternal and offspring health, both shortly after delivery and long-terms risks. The proposed work will include collaboration between epidemiologists, statisticians, and clinicians working at KEP, at other departments in Karolinska Institutet, but also international collaboration. Data sources primarily include cohorts from national registers but also more specific data from Quality registers. The work will include studies of environmental factors and maternal and offspring health after delivery and later in life. The work will also focus on different study designs, aiming to strengthen causal inference. The studies will include analytical analyses of maternal, pregnancy, and neonatal factors and long-term morbidity of offspring and mother.
More specifically, some of the projects involve:
1. Analytic studies on long-term risks in offspring focusing on:
a. Maternal body-mass index (BMI)
b. Gestational age (preterm birth)
c. The severely depressed newborn infant (neonatal asphyxia)
d. Fetal growth restriction.
2. Use of different study designs to strengthen causal inference within these areas (population-based cohort studies, sibling studies, and mediation analyses).
