Karolinska Institutet, Dept. of Oncology-Pathology, Research group Göndör

At the Department of Oncology-Pathology basic, translational and clinical research and educational activities related to cancer is carried out. Approximately 300 people from over 40 nations are currently working at the department. About 30 research groups with various cancer research profiles are involved and we have around 110 PhD students. The Department of Oncology-Pathology is responsible for undergraduate courses in Pathology, Oncology and Forensic Medicine for medical students, as well as for Tumor biology courses for biomedicine students and Pathology courses for opticians.

Position
We search for a highly motivated postdoctoral researcher in bioinformatics to join a consortium of three research teams dedicated to understand the function of 3D epigenome folding and its deregulation in human diseases from entirely novel perspectives. The candidate is expected to drive a postdoctoral project and participate in collaborative efforts to uncover hitherto unknown therapeutic targets in complex diseases, such as cancer and diabetes.

The employment is for one year, with possibility of extension for one more year.

Division and duties
The work will be carried out in the labs of Drs Anita Göndör and Rolf Ohlsson, who have innovated state-of-the-art techniques enabling the analysis of 3D chromatin structures and chromatin fibre networks in single cells and small cell populations to provide unique opportunities for novel discoveries. The candidate will also work with the group of Dr. Laura Baranello, which studies the functional and spatial coordination between transcription and regulated DNA breaks within the chromatin context. Newly developed approaches for next-generation sequencing will be used to elucidate how topoisomerase activity is regulated and affects transcription. The results are expected to provide a new rational to interfere with transcription to affect the growth of cancer cells. It is anticipated that the candidate will work in close collaboration with researchers at the National Institutes of Health in the USA.

Model systems are exclusively based on human cells and unique, well-characterized patient material, such liquid and solid tumors as well as muscle and adipose tissue. The successful candidate will join three groups consisting of 7 postdocs, 6 PhD students and four affiliated scientists.

- Excellent knowledge in biostatistics

- Extensive experience in using R/BioConductor, Unix/Linux environment (prior scripting language experience e.g. Python/Perl is a plus)

- Experience in data visualization

- Experience in meta-analysis

- Experience in SNP calling from NGS data is a plus

- Proficiency in written and spoken English

- Good understanding of biological concepts and/or willingness to learn

- Experience in working with wet lab scientists

A high level of organizational and communication skills, as well as an ability to independently perform experiments and implement interpretation of data is mandatory.

Application process
The application must contain the following documents in English:

  1. A complete curriculum vitae including the date of the thesis defense, title of the thesis, current position, academic distinctions, and any committee work
  2. A complete list of publications
