Karolinska Institutet, Institutionen för neurovetenskap, Silberberg

The laboratory of Prof. Gilad Silberberg lab uses electrophysiological, morphological, optogenetic, and computational methods to study neural microcircuits in the neocortex and basal-ganglia. In particular we are interested in the dynamic properties of neuronal microcircuits underlying sensory and motor processing. We study the dynamic interactions between different types of excitatory and inhibitory neurons in order to unravel the way neural networks are structured and dynamically orchestrated.

The Silberberg lab at the Department of Neuroscience of Karolinska Institutet is now searching a postdoc candidate for a project using in vivo electrophysiology, calcium imaging, and optogenetics.

The project is funded by a grant from the Knut and Alice Wallenberg foundation. Funding is initially granted for the first 2 years, and may be extended according to progress and available funding.

Entry requirements
Scholarships to pursue postdoctoral studies may be awarded to individuals who come from other countries with the intention of remaining in Sweden only while obtaining all or part of their education. The head of the department determines whether their previous training and scholarly qualifications correspond to a Swedish PhD or higher. Having received a salary or other remuneration from Karolinska Institutet during the past two years may be disqualifying.

One requirement for receiving a scholarship for postdoctoral studies is central registration as a postdoc.

Candidates are required to have a strong neuroscience background with documented experience in patch-clamp recording and/or in vivo electrophysiology. Knowledge of neuroanatomy, imaging, and computer programming are highly advantageous. The successful candidate should be ambitious, focused, hard-working, and possess good social and communication skills.

Type of scholarship
Karolinska Institutet awards scholarships to pursue postdoctoral studies.  This educational scholarship, which is paid for a maximum of two years within four years after the receipt of a PhD or the equivalent, is tax-exempt.

The amount is set for twelve months at a time and is paid out on a monthly basis. In exceptional cases, shorter periods may be acceptable.

Application process
An application must contain the following documents in English:

The following documents are required:

  • Complete CV and publication list.
  • A summary of current work (max. one page).
  • A summary of proposed research (max. one page).
  • Names and contact details of at least two references.

The application is to be submitted through the MyNetwork recruitment system.

Environment
Research groups at the Department of Neuroscience study different aspects of the function of the normal nervous system, as well as disturbances, injuries and diseases affecting the nervous system. Projects include a broad range of studies at the molecular and cellular levels, the network level and at the level of the overall organization of the nervous system. The department also conducts undergraduate education in neuroscience, anatomy and histology in a number of programs at Karolinska Institutet.
