The Integrative Physiology research group at the Department of Molecular Medicine and Surgery at Karolinska Institutet is seeking a highly motivated postdoctoral researcher to join the group of Professors Juleen R. Zierath and Anna Krook. The research is focused on translational studies on cellular and molecular mechanisms underlying insulin resistance and type 2 diabetes and the positive effects of physical exercise on glucose and lipid metabolism in skeletal muscle. The candidate will join our research group to explore the molecular signal transducers involved in the regulation of glucose transport and to test therapies to restore glucose uptake in skeletal muscle from people with type 2 diabetes.
The candidate will work on understanding skeletal muscle glucose uptake, with a focus on insulin-independent and insulin-dependent mechanisms.
Expertise and research experience in the study of cellular metabolism is desired. This includes experience in cell and molecular biology. Expertise and experience in rodent animal handling and surgery, with a focus on skeletal muscle. Experience of using stable isotopes and Inductively Coupled Plasma-Mass Spectroscopy to observe coupled ion fluxes is a merit. The candidate must be fluent in English, have excellent writing skills and be able to take the lead on projects. We are looking for a cooperative candidate who thrives to work with others. The candidate will join an enthusiastic, collaborative, hardworking and dynamic team.
Scholarships for postdoctoral qualification can be established for foreign researchers who place their qualifications in Sweden. The purpose of scholarships for postdoctoral qualification is to promote internationalization and contribute to research qualification after a doctorate or equivalent. A scholarship for carrying out postdoctoral research can be granted for a maximum of two years within a four year period following the receipt of a doctoral degree or equivalent. To be eligible for a postdoctoral scholarship, the person must have obtained a doctorate or a foreign degree deemed to be equivalent to a doctorate. Applicants who have not completed a doctorate at the end of the application period may also apply, provided that all requirements for a completed degree are met before the (intended) start date of the post doctoral education.
The head of the department determines whether their previous training and scholarly qualifications correspond to a Swedish doctorate or higher.
Location: Solna
The amount is tax free and it is set for twelve months at a time, paid out on a six months basis. In exceptional cases, shorter periods may be acceptable.
