Do you want to contribute to top quality medical research?

In the Brodin lab, the team performs state-of-the-art immunomonitoring analyses. The lab receives samples, mostly from blood, and prepares these using a unique liquid handling robotic platform, stains cells with antibodies and acquire data by mass cytometry, spectral flow cytometry, mRNA-sequencing and plasma protein analyses.

The lab is looking to hire a lab technician to be responsible for handling and processing blood samples, and stimulation of blood immune cells prior to cytometry analyses. The work is hands-on in the laboratory and involves sample preparation, reagent preparations, performing stimulation experiments, staining and acquisition of samples by flow cytometry. This position is full time employment, 40h week.

Your mission

The Petter Brodin research group develops and applies experimental and computational research methods for systems-level analyses of human immune systems. The aim of the team is to understand human immune system variation in health and disease and the development of immune systems early in life. The group is half experimental and half computational and belongs to the unit of clinical pediatrics which is a broad, multi-disciplinary unit at the Department of Women’s and Children’s Health, KI.

The responsibilities of this candidate in the lab will mainly involve:

  • Clinical sample reception (both onsite and offsite) and cryosample management.
  • Processing and recording the sample/subject metadata in a database by coordinating with the responsible experimentalist.
  • Preparation of working lab sheets and protocols tailored to each project’s needs for clinical sample processing.
  • Large-scale planning and handling of clinical samples (hundreds of clinical samples each day) and their organization into plates for proteomic analysis.
  • PBMC prep, plasma prep, and cell isolation methods.
  • Buffer exchange procedures for samples to be prepped for cytometry analyses and performing other experimental research tasks like establishing cell cultures.
  • Stimulations of blood immune cells.
  • Staining and acquisition of samples by multicolor flow cytometry.
  • General lab duties like receiving deliveries and organizing on a daily basis etc.
  • Work management and coordination in the lab together with other team members.

The technician will be an integral member of the Brodin research lab and will participate in many different ongoing research projects and will be able to learn many cutting edge technologies used in the facility and the research group.

Your profile

The successful candidate should have extensive lab experience particularly with methods like blood sample handling, reagent/buffer preparation, error-free and meticulous sample handling dispensed into multiple plates for proteomic analysis, and experience in method development with iterative testing of protocols and careful documentation. Prior experience in record maintenance (with basic computer skills) of clinical samples and reagents will be helpful. Demonstrated experience in cytometry and a grasp of new technological development and its understanding will be a plus. The successful candidate must thrive in interdisciplinary environments and should be dedicated to performing the tasks assigned in the lab meticulously and with great care. The candidate must be comfortable working both independently and in collaboration with the lab heads and other members of the team (when necessary) and contribute to the team’s concerted efforts. The candidate must have good communication skills in both English and Swedish as the team is multicultural and interdisciplinary.

A selection will be made among qualified applicants based on the following criteria:

  1. Documented experience in some of the aforementioned requirements.
  2. Documented expertise in sample handling, organization, blood cell preparation, PBMC prep, and freezing/thawing of cells.
  3. Prior experience and knowledge in biology and some experience in immunology.
  4. Expressed interest in the job described above.
