Do you want to contribute to top quality medical research?

The Department of Clinical Sciences at Danderyd Hospital conducts extensive clinical research in several areas. The department is growing and consists of research nurses, biomedical analysts, senior researchers, post docs, and Ph.D students as well as administrative personnel. Each year, about 400 first level students conduct their medical education at the department.

We are searching for an ambitious postdoctoral fellow for an initial appointment of 1 year, with a possible extension for up to 1 additional year, to join the team behind the MEDECA (Markers in Early Detection of Cancer) study and collaborate with the Clinical Artificial Intelligence Laboratory (CAIR-Lab). MEDECA is a large and interdisciplinary long-term project focusing on blood biomarkers indicative of occult cancer. In close collaboration with world-leading scientists within the field of "liquid biopsy", the aim of the project is to identify a multi-analyte blood test that can detect and map cancer within a mixed population presenting with serious but unspecific symptoms. Blood samples are analyzed for a panel of novel and established blood biomarkers predictive of an underlying cancer. These include circulating tumor DNA, platelet mRNA profiling, affinity-based proteomics, and nuclear resonance metabolomics. Samples are already collected, and analyses are ongoing.

Your mission

The postdoctoral candidate will work with the existing data set as well as ongoing data processing, with a focus on applying AI and machine learning techniques. The position will include internal and external presentations, manuscript writing, grant applications, and close collaborative work within the international network, driving his/her own projects forward. The candidate will also have the opportunity to participate in CAIR-Lab projects, contributing to the development of clinical AI innovations.

Your profile

Applicants should have a Ph.D. in biomedicine, molecular biology, or another relevant Life Science discipline. A background in coding and an interest in AI and machine learning is required. Applicants should provide their GitHub profiles or equivalent platforms for the assessment of their coding skills and adherence to common coding guidelines. Expertise in analytical/statistical tools such as R, GraphPad Prism is needed, as well as the application of bioinformatics methods in data interpretation. Earlier experience in plasma proteomics methodology, metabolomics, and mass spectrometry is a strong merit for the position. Interest in cancer biology is a prerequisite, and knowledge of this research field is an advantage.

Requirements

To be eligible for employment as a postdoctor a doctoral degree or a foreign degree deemed to be equivalent to a doctoral degree is required. This eligibility requirement must be fulfilled at the latest at the time of the employment decision. It is considered as an advantage if you have completed your doctoral degree within the last three years, if there are special reasons, your degree may have been completed earlier.

To be qualified for employment as a postdoctoral researcher, applicants must have obtained a doctorate or have equivalent scientific competence. Applicants should have significant experience to be able to lead their own project and also coach/supervise other students (master, Ph.D., or assist other colleagues in the group if required); and have first-author publications in recognized peer-reviewed journals. We highly regard careful record keeping, strong collaborative skills, and creative thinking. In addition, good oral and written communication skills in English are required. We put great emphasis on the ability of the person to collaborate with the rest of the team, prioritize tasks, and help the group reach its goals.
