Do you want to contribute to top quality medical research?

A Research Specialist position is available in Martin Bergö’s lab at the Department of Biosciences and Nutrition at Karolinska Institutet (https://ki.se/en/bionut/department-of-biosciences-and-nutrition) The lab’s focus is on how free radicals and antioxidants interact with nutritional and metabolic needs of tumour cells during cancer development. Contrary to popular wisdom, antioxidants stimulate cancer metastasis, and we are now exploring this finding to develop anti-metastatic drugs and to be able to give well-informed nutritional advice to cancer patients. We are also investigating the role of the ubiquitin system, specially E3 ubiquitin ligases in cancers to find potential opportunity for cancer therapy.

Your mission

The employed Research Specialist is expected to perform research and provide academic leadership in experimental and translational molecular cancer biology, with a particular emphasis on cancer redox biology and the ubiquitin system. You will develop the field through internal and external collaborations, supervise master students and lead the day-to-day work of participating PhD students and postdocs; prepare and submit grant applications.

Eligibility requirements

To be eligible for employment as a Research Specialist, in addition to holding a Degree of Doctor, PhD, or having equivalent scientific expertise, the applicant must have demonstrated research expertise as well as have documented research experience after defending their doctoral dissertation.

The applicant must also have demonstrated a good scientific independence to which their own contribution has been significant and a research plan of high quality with a clear potential for the future.

Expertise in the following areas is required: cancer biology including assays for cell transformation, proliferation, migration, invasion, and in vivo xenograft tumor growth; molecular biology including how to control the expression of endogenous and exogenous genes in cells with lentiviral, Crispr/Cas9, shRNA, and siRNA approaches; and a good understanding of disease mechanisms and treatment of lung cancer, malignant melanoma, and neuroblastoma (at least two of the three).

Emphasis will be placed on personal suitability.

It is particularly meritorious that the applicant has shown

  • Ability to apply for and obtain competitive grants
  • Ability to understand, in depth, molecular mechanisms of cancer-related projects
  • Ability to effectively supervise master and doctoral students

After an overall assessment of the expertise and merits of the applicants in relation to the subject area, Karolinska Institutet will determine which of them has the best potential to contribute to a positive development of the activities at KI.
