Do you want to contribute to top quality medical research?

We are recruiting a research assistant to provide support to the Hellström-Lindberg group. The group research focus is on cellular and molecular pathways underlying aberrant stem cell function and ineffective erythropoiesis in myelodysplastic syndromes (MDS). Recent studies from our group on this subject encompass Elvarsdottir, et al., Leukemia 2020, Shiozawa, et al., Blood 2017, Mortera Blanco, et al., Blood 2017, Dimitriou, et al., Oncotarget 2016, Conte, et al., Br J Haematology 2015; Malcovati, et al, Blood 2015, Woll, et al., Cancer Cell 2014, Nikpour, et al. Leukemia 2013. We are exploring MDS pathogenesis along two lines; to understand the competitive advantage of SF3B1 mutated stem cells in the human niche, and to outline the mechanisms behind terminal erythroid failure. This is studied in primary patient samples from our MDS biobank, utilizing diverse technologies such as advanced flow cytometry, high-throughput RNA sequencing including single cell analysis, and various in vitro and in vivo stem cell assays.

The position will be for one year and be placed at  HERM (http://ki.se/en/medh/herm). The research group and the department offer an engaging and international research environment where a research assistant will have the opportunity to contribute to high-quality research and capacity building at the international top level.

Your mission

Myelodysplastic syndromes (MDS) comprise a broad spectrum of hematological malignancies affecting the HSC compartment and causing myeloid cytopenias. One particular subtype, MDS with ring sideroblasts (MDS-RS), is largely caused by de novo mutations in the gene SF3B1 and other splice factors and is characterized by severe anemia with limited treatment options.

As a research assistant you will work in a multidisciplinary team and provide support in characterizing the cellular and molecular mechanisms underlying MDS-RS towards the identification of novel targetable pathways to minimize the disease’s impact. You will employ a combination of flow cytometry (to isolate distinct hematopoietic stem and progenitor cells), advanced cell and molecular biology techniques, high throughput characterization approaches, general data analysis and bioinformatics.

Your profile

Applicants should have at least a master degree in medicine, biotechnology, molecular biology or cell biology. Candidates with a combined background covering medicine, biology, math and programming are highly encouraged to apply. Having the base computational/programming skills needed to learn how to perform bioinformatics will be looked upon favorably. Similarly, previous experience with imaging, single cell RNA sequencing and flow cytometry for analysis of primary hematopoietic cells will be looked upon positively. Applicant should be fluent in English (written and spoken). Emphasis will be placed on personal suitability.
