Do you want to contribute to top quality medical research?

Your mission

Our groups main interest is in the investigation of endothelial cell function, in both normal physiology and in cardiovascular and thromboembolic disorders. Recently, we characterised the ‘endothelial specific transcriptome’, which has allowed us to identify novel endothelial enriched genes. The advertised position involves the study of such endothelial enriched proteins in the development of thrombotic disease. You will identify potential disease links using analysis of patient cohort data (genetic and plasma proteomic profiling) and will investigate the underlying mechanisms using various vascular model systems under different conditions, such as inflammation and shear flow modulation.

Eligibility requirements

To be eligible for employment as a Research Specialist, in addition to holding a Degree of Doctor, PhD, or having equivalent scientific expertise, the applicant must have demonstrated research expertise as well as have documented research experience after defending their doctoral dissertation.

We are seeking to recruit a person with a PhD degree in biological sciences and a strong interest and extensive background in endothelial and vascular biology, inflammation, and thrombosis. The candidate will have extensive experience in the isolation of primary endothelial cells from human tissue, as well as subsequent culture and analysis of endothelial cells under static, laminar flow, and oscillating flow conditions. Essential techniques include in vitro assays of leucocyte recruitment under flow conditions, extensive knowledge of molecular biology techniques including Western blotting, ELISA, Immunohistochemistry, qPCR, siRNA, immunofluorescence, as well as confocal imaging skills and live cell imaging using time lapse microscopy. In addition, bioinformatics experience in analysis of largescale RNA sequencing in both cultured endothelial cells as well as human tissue databases is required.
Of merit is previous experience in working with large public datasets to identify cell type specific genes and functions, and experience of working in R package. Furthermore, previous experience in using systems-based approaches to identify and characterise proteins with endothelial enriched expression is of merit.
Expertise in scientific writing and excellent communication skills in English are also vital. The position includes supervision of Master´s degree students and co-supervision of PhD students in the group. The position involves being responsible for all cell-based experiments, model systems and organisation of the necessary cell lab facilities of the group. We put great emphasis on that the person can collaborate with the rest of the team, has the ability to prioritise and help the group reach its goals.

Assessment criteria

After an overall assessment of the expertise and merits of the applicants in relation to the subject area, Karolinska Institutet will determine which of them has the best potential to contribute to a positive development of the activities at KI.
