The Göritz laboratory is offering a stimulating, international environment. We are part of the Department of Cell and Molecular Biology at the Karolinska Institute in Stockholm, Sweden, one of the world’s leading medical universities. The lab is located in Biomedicum, a state-of-the-art research building on Solna campus.
Our lab investigates stromal scar formation and its impact on axonal regeneration and functional recovery following spinal cord injury. We discovered a new population of perivascular cells, called type A pericytes, as the source of fibrotic scar tissue (Göritz et al., Science, 2011) and identified pericyte-derived scar formation as a therapeutic target to achieve axonal regeneration and functional recovery following spinal cord injury (Dias et al., Cell, 2018). Recently, we showed that fibrotic scarring by perivascular cells is a conserved mechanism in the adult mammalian CNS (Dias et al., Nature Com., 2021). The intended project will test different strategies to interfere with fibrotic scarring to enhance axonal regeneration and functional recovery following spinal cord injury.

We are seeking a highly motivated and enthusiastic postdoctoral fellow to study scar formation and axonal regeneration following spinal cord injury.
We are looking for highly motivated, independent, and driven candidates, with at least one first authorship publication in a peer-reviewed scientific journal. The successful applicant will have a strong background in Neuroscience, preferentially with knowledge in CNS injury and repair. A documented ability to independently carry out experimental research projects is required, as are good communication skills in spoken and written English. Experience with transgenic mouse models, spinal cord injury models, imaging techniques, opto-/chemogenetics techniques and bioinformatics is of advantage.
Scholarships for postdoctoral qualification can be established for foreign researchers who place their qualifications in Sweden. The purpose of scholarships for postdoctoral qualification is to promote internationalization and contribute to research qualification after a doctorate or equivalent.
A scholarship for carrying out postdoctoral research can be granted for a maximum of two years within a four year period following the receipt of a doctoral degree or equivalent.
To be eligible for a postdoctoral scholarship, the person must have obtained a doctorate or a foreign degree deemed to be equivalent to a doctorate. Applicants who have not completed a doctorate at the end of the application period may also apply, provided that all requirements for a completed degree are met before the (intended) start date of the post doctoral education.
The head of the department determines whether their previous training and scholarly qualifications correspond to a Swedish doctorate or higher.
Location: Stockholm/Solna
The amount is tax free and it is set for twelve months at a time, paid out on a six months basis. In exceptional cases, shorter periods may be acceptable.
