In our lab we focus on the tumor microenvironment to find targets for immunotherapy for cancer. We have found that targeting using specific antibodies for Tumor Associated Macrophages (TAM) can be used for treatment of cancer (PNAS; 2020, 15;117 and Cell Rep; 2016, 100;2000). We are now developing this treatment for human application and are also investigating other possibilities for modifying the functions of TAMs for treatment purposes.
Prof. Mikael Karlssons group is at the Department of Microbiology, Tumor and Cell Biology (MTC) at Karolinska Institutet, in Solna (Biomedicum). The department conducts research and teaching in immunology, infectious biology, cell biology and cancer. Our keywords are interdisciplinary, clinically based basic research and national and international cooperation.
The postdoc will work to understand the interplay between TAMs and other immune cells in the tumor as well as investigate the metastatic niche in lympnodes. The lab use animal models of cancer as well as in vitro systems including live imaging. We also investigate patient material, molecular and biochemical methods as well as omics approaches. Most of the methods to be used for the projects has already been setup and this project has support form and NIH grant and is done in collaboration with Rockefeller University in New York. The project can be modified to fit to the interest of the candidate and will involve both in vivo an in vitro work.
Scholarships for postdoctoral qualification can be established for foreign researchers who place their qualifications in Sweden. The purpose of scholarships for postdoctoral qualification is to promote internationalization and contribute to research qualification after a doctorate or equivalent.
A scholarship for carrying out postdoctoral research can be granted for a maximum of two years within a four year period following the receipt of a doctoral degree or equivalent.
To be eligible for a postdoctoral scholarship, the person must have obtained a doctorate or a foreign degree deemed to be equivalent to a doctorate. Applicants who have not completed a doctorate at the end of the application period may also apply, provided that all requirements for a completed degree are met before the (intended) start date of the post doctoral education.
The head of the department determines whether their previous training and scholarly qualifications correspond to a Swedish doctorate or higher.
